The pope’s astronomer José Gabriel Funes has been telling the press lately that space aliens are A-Okay with God. The pope has an astronomer?

The Pope’s astronomer, José Gabriel Funes, a Jesuit priest, told [Vatican newspaper] L’Osservatore Romano that there would be nothing surprising about the existence of intelligent extra-terrestrials.

“Just as there is a multiplicity of creatures on Earth, so there could be other beings created by God [beyond it],” he said. The interview suggests that the Church’s hierarchy may be paving the way to showing that Pope Benedict XVI is more open to the ideas of modern science than he has previously seemed to be.

Father Funes also admits that he is a believer of evolution while, the Pope has “damned evolutionary ideas that leave no room for God.” And in January, the Pope got rid of the telescope at the Vatican summer home to make room for guests. So does the Pope know he has an astronomer? And how soon from the time he reads this article until the guy is out of a job?
