Eva Mendes And Cameron Diaz Win/Lose On Spike TV’s “Guys’ Choice Awards”
2 June 2008, 5:00 PM. By Daniel Mauser
Two Cubanas snagged awards over the weekend on Spike TV’s “Guys’ Choice Awards” because, come on. Eva Mendes beat out Eva Longoria as “The Hotter Eva” and Cameron Diaz received the totally underminey “Decade of Hotness” award. Good for them?
Nah. Indulge us, if you will, and allow us to get a little something off our chest. Burp:
We love men, both as a nice idea and as a nice idea smiling at us from the other side of the bed, so we feel very badly every time we find men reduced to some silly caricature of a crude, buffoonish, flatulent, insensitive bore. Such is our feeling towards Spike TV’s (and we honestly do love Spike TV, if only because they show “Ren and Stimpy”) “Guys’ Choice Awards.” A potentially fun idea transformed into a stereotype with categories like “Alpha Male,” “Guy Movie Of The Year” (no, it wasn’t Sex and the City), “Brass Balls” and “Biggest Ass Kicker.”
That’s not to say we don’t like guys who are into sports, knows their way with a wrench or can burp the alphabet, we just don’t endorse the connotation that such men are thick-headed oafs and proud of it while women have to act as shrill mother figures keeping them in line or disposable bikini-clad nymphets for their pleasure. What’s the point of this stereotype? Because if it’s to get women, well. It’s not working. We don’t want to be friends with, related or perform a reverse cowgirl on guys who celebrate being thoughtless and ignorant.
