Guanabee Grows A Pair –Of Tetas, That Is.
4 June 2008, 3:45 PM. By Daniel Mauser
Guanabee Is Gossip, Pop Culture And Lifestlye For The Latina In You.
Dear Guanabee Reader,
Yes. It’s true. Guanabee is evolving, going through puberty, sprouting. If you are a frequent visitor you have probably noticed changes in the blog’s editorial: more celebrity coverage, fashion and lifestyle stories. Guanabee is still producing Latino-related articles and commentary, but now you will find it appeals more to your female side. Just the same, you can still expect the great, irreverent content that you have come to love, but now better-organized. Guanabee Editor Cindy Casares will continue to bring you the best reporting of media and pop culture; Associate Editor Alejandra Alvarez will investigate celebrity gossip and dress-up the site with fashion and beauty tips; Contributing Editor and heartthrob Gabriel Caro will dismember sex stories and provide relationship advice; and Editor at Large Daniel Mauser will weigh in with the occasional society and culture account. Additionally, you will find stories on travel, food, motherhood, weddings and quinceañeras.
After talking to a couple of you, we’ve decided this is the best way to bring you the bits of entertainment that matter to you most. And if the site is turning too girly for your taste, allow us to recommend our brother site, Machochip, where the guys are growing hairs down there of their own. (Ew! Sorry.) And, of course, both sites will continue to share stories that appeal to our audience regardless of gender.
One last point to make: we hope that you will continue to make us part of your daily reading–we certainly enjoy having you around–that you will continue to comment on the stories that move you, And that you join us in poking fun of our culture and our world in the name of progress.
Love,
The Guanabee Team

This is a mistake. Not only are you marginalizing your audience, you are marketing yourselves to serve a purpose that many other websites already do, and much better mind you. And you spoke to a COUPLE of us? What are you guys doing?! Bad idea my friends. No me gusta para nada. Once again, if I wanted celebrity coverage, fashion and lifestyle stories targeted only to women I would look elsewhere. I’m disappointed. I think improving the quality of your posts rather than streamlining your target demographic would have been a better approach. But good luck to you gbee. I have the feeling I’ll be visiting less.
I’m afraid I’m going to have to agree with Lulu. If you aren’t giving me the new news in the irreverent style I have grown to like (I find myself laughing less and less), then I won’t even bother anymore. There is so much bullshit out there, so many injustices, so many pompous, boorish, hacky, self-entitled pieces of crap poisoning the air that we breathe (not to mention the culture we seek to maintain and improve upon) that irony and acidity is in high demand. So many deluded and grasping souls deserve to get knocked down a giant peg or three, and I looked to you guys to do it. Improve your writing and your wit, sharpen the tongues, embolden the minds, and I’ll stick to my erstwhile visits. If not, I guess I’ll have to find other distractions, other food for thought.
Is this a joke?…….Tell me you folks are just BS us. I don’t see this ending well. I say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Wah Wah
The way I read this post is that you guys are going the way of Gridskipper? If so, then I’m outta here! (yeah… yeah.. don’t cry.)
So you breaking up the “boys” and the “girls” because obviously we cannot be entertained by the same material. What? Do we not all laugh at “abuelita when after me with a chancla” jokes? Do we not fight about who has the better food (Yeah… that means YOU CUBANS!) only to realize that at its worst its still better than any casserole?
& if by “celebrity coverage” you mean bagging on JLo (some self-hate going on? methinks somebody could not pull off the turban look), then you might as well start posting Lou Dobb clips.
Go back to the drawing board.
Within my first week of discovering Guanabee it found a home on my bookmark toolbar, and is now one of my favorite sites ever. I love to discover new aspects of my latino-ness and appreciate the unique spin on news and pop culture. “Our Chuleta”- brilliant! But do we need more Lindsay/Heidi/ whatever coverage? No! Stick to what we know and love- immigration, stereotypes, the election, Ugly Betty, fresas. That’s what we’re really here for.
Guys,
We know the recent changes in editorial might come as a shock to you. You may be thinking: what is happening to my little Guanabee? Is it just turning into another Perez Hilton? The answer is no. We still aim to provide the best commentary on topics that consider are important to you. Some work better than others, and we are getting better at knowing which ones you like best –of course it always help to get feedback from you. The elements of culture and Latino identity remain, and apart from that, you now get some downtime with the occasional celebrity and fahsion post. We strive to make all our posts smart, original and analytical. We have new features and coverage coming your way, which we think you will love.
todo mal, guanabee!! i agree with the comments of other people above. we don’t want you to change. we liked the website the way it was. and how do you know what topics are most important to us if u only talked to a couple people?
also, i don’t see why we have to separate the boys and girls. we all came to the blog for the same reasons. the segregation idea is just based on stereotypes of what each gender likes…
i dont know guanabee…. sounds[and smells] fishie!
well i’ll still be coming to the site because i have nothing better to do, so please dont disapoint with this “new” shit.
Great, another drop in the hyper entertainment pool.
Great, another drop in the hyper entertainment pool.

I have been coming here less and less and this isn’t helping. Boo. The web does’t need anymore celebrity gossip. Food and Travel fine, more shit about C.aguilera and J. Albs, no buen.
“and Editor at Large Daniel Mauser will weigh in with the occasional society and culture account”
LOL. Sorry, I find the above sentence hilarious. When did Mr. Mauser become a cultural critic of American culture?
Anyhoo … I agree with everyone. I think y’all are making a mistake and will probably lose Latino readers. Wait, are you trying to gain more White readers? Hmm, that could explain this whole change in direction. Don’t do it!!!!!!
Also, I still heart Alex. :)
Everyone above has hit the major points of this blog’s “supposed” changes. There is no need for this blog to become like other “gossip” blogs out there nor the need to separate the sexes. Seriously, I’m supposed to be drawn in by sports and video games? I don’t care for that.
When I found Guanabee, I was surprised by its take on issues and spin on Latinos. It was hilarious! It soon became the top blog I read. There were more people making comments on this blog months back, when the posts were very interesting, insightful, and leading towards discussion. It saddens me to see so many of your posts go without comments. Have you noticed that a large number of those posts are about celebrities? If you gauge “reader interest” by page traffic, sure, those are going to get more traffic but that’s because a group larger than your readers are looking for that information. However, I think a better measure of the interest of your readership would be via the number of comments a post generates.
To say Daniel Mauser will weigh in with account of society and culture is laughable, as GBAN pointed out. This is the first post by Mauser I read since I started reading this blog. I don’t believe he will have the time to do nor will it be as interesting as the previous posts of the same type.
you can still expect the great, irreverent content that you have come to love
Sadly, that has been missing from this blog for a while.
-DRF
I find it ironic that irreverence is what commenters want, but it’s exactly what most don’t understand. I’ve noticed more and more that commenters here are the most uptight individuals I’ve ever read.
Guanabee’s irreverence is novel and quite contrary to sites like Vivir Latino. It’s why I love it. I think Guanabee’s evolution is great.
People that can laugh at themselves are a happy people. Unfortunately, the above commenters exemplify the reality that Latinos have a long way to go.
I guess “raza unida” and all that crap is still going strong.
@Guerrerro
I’m not sure how the above commenters are emplifying any latino lack of love of irreverence. They’re mostly voicing their disappointment at the site’s changes, which they’re entitled to (and please commenters, voice your ideas on our survey, which can be found on the left side of the page!).
Its not a question of being able to laugh at themselves…
There’s nothing funny about the post, its not a jk situation.
. . . and somewhere out there, Rebekah is spinning in her grave.
@ Benny: Seriously, where is that child? I only have dickster still around to call me a self-loathing talentless hack.
@ Guana Bust A Nut: I love you too, kitten.
In fact, I love all of you in a way that suggests neither intimacy nor commitment. I really hope you’ll stick around.
I found you guys through LatinGossip and have visited your site regularly since then.
I was entralled to find your website with fascinating and quirky posts and commentary with a kick of “spicy coverage.” As your counterpart, LatinGossip ususally only posted about Ninel Conde’s boob job or who doesn’t have a porno tape.
On that note, I could care less about Lindsey Lohan and Ashlee Simpson and if I did care I’d hit up PerezHilton and the like. Besides, you already make your point about outside the Latino Culture with your “Watchando” segment.
Your website is refreshing and I’d expect from you guys a post about “Human Tamales from Mexico” rather than “Ashlee Simpson And Pete Wentz Are Married.”
However I could see this one coming since the Aliza Shvarts posts.
ok
so just call it La loca fog hog blog……
that means now your blog will still suck but in a girly kind of way….
if you got dollars comin in as a female blog,
I say go for it……
should i not post anything since i am a swinging dick kind of single guy?
is this the end of us?
So research has shown that the blog will do better by losing its male audience? I guess the gays will have to migrate to Machochip and hope that blog beefs up its coverage of homoerotic stories that preferably include Ronaldo!
Seriously, Guanabee debuted on the scene with something new, fresh, and sharp —it doesn’t sound like it is moving forward with the same edge.
@Guerrero: Hold on. Did you actually say that Guanabee’s irreverence is novel? Um, did you just discover the internet? Wait, I know … you must be a member of that isolated Brazilian tribe we’ve been hearing about in the news? Well, if you are in fact a tribal member, I’d like to be the first to welcome you to the internet.
Now, let’s get down to business: it bugs me that you and others (like a certain blogger who shall remain nameless) keep perpetuating the notion that Latinos are somehow stupid or not sophisticated enough to “understand” certain things (like irony or the phenomenon that is Barack Obama). Do you actually believe that’s there’s only one way to be irreverent and funny? Do you actually believe that you’re somehow more intelligent because you laugh at (agree with) everything the editors write? News flash: cultural differences aren’t only seen in food, fashion, and music; they’re also found in speech and language (and in order to understand irony, you have to process language effectively).
Ok … I will acknowledge that most people here are very Americanized (some of us more than others, of course). But … some readers react negatively to some of the posts here on Guanabee for various reasons. So, before rushing to judge people who comment on here, you should remember that not all Latinos are the same. Anglo America culture (which includes humor) should not be the standard by which we judge ourselves. You should know that by now.
I’m so confused, I thought that pic was of a stingray…
As long as Cindy is on board, this blog will remain at the top of its game. Why? Because it sucks to constantly be questioned and harassed when you disagree with the canons and self appointed gatekeepers of “la cultura”, yet she’s been able to maintain and vocalize a solid and challenging pov. That takes major, major skills.
Maybe its idealism, or my commitment to the reconquista in all its forms, but I still believe this site, even with its recent shift in focus, will gain momentum and be instrumental in the uphill battle to change the way Latinos are perceived in mainstream media -and in the Latino community itself.
I’m not interested in celebrities unless they are dead or dying. But the aspects of culture I do care about - art music books fashion sex – trust will be handled well. These are the brains that brought us the fuckability index, socialite interview “translations” and the chronicles of Junot. They know what they are doing, that’s why we all came here in the first place. I’ll check the dude one out during the next world cup but swear if anyone starts throwing around the word “chica” without ironic intent, I’m out.
Also, someone that champions a different way to cover Latino issues is beyond capable of writing posts on society and culture. Hopefully said posts will be accompanied by ridiculously sexy photos of Mr. Mauser posing in scandalous underthings. yes? YES!!
You built a good audience with the content that you were already posting. Will branching out into other topics help? They sound boring to me, but the suits who control your paycheck and advertising packages seem to think so.
Examples:
- More Details On How Papa Joe’s Giant Papa Face Ruined Jessica Simpson And Tony Romo’s Relationship
- How To Wear Short Shorts Without Looking Like You Frequent A Short Bus
Yawn.
Buena suerte muchachos.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I agree with guana bust a nut. Does anyone else think that is SUCKS that Alex is stuck writting about celebrities and fashion? These topics are the core of this new girly guanabee angle that is going to reduce readership. She’s soooo good, let her weigh in on society and culture! Remember that piece she did on the way women are sexualized? GREAT STUFF. Daniel, papa, I’m sorry pero te fuiste mal. I don’t need downtime with the “occasional celebrity or fashion post.” THAT’S WHAT OTHER SITES ARE FOR AND THEY ARE BETTER AT IT. Give me more reasons to laugh at myself other than Jessica Alba. And the boys are telling you that they WANT TO STAY. Machochip cannot handle the male readership from guanabee. I’m starting to think that Daniel’s decisions are being driven by other REA$ON$.
As a new reader, I can’t say I’m surprised, or annoyed, about the celebrity angle on things. Let’s face it, celebrity news drives in hits (and revenue.) And if you don’t believe me, watch Primer Impacto or buy an issue of any Latino magazine, even if it is about Britney or Lindsay.
As a former journalist (who after six years made the evil switch to Publicity because I can’t survive on eating Ramen, it’s carb heavy), I understand that revenue trumps all. I will continue to support Guanabee because I’m Latina and want Guanabee to succeed. I hope everyone can do the same!!!
Guys,
Thank you for your constructive feedback and input, ultimately it helps Guanabee become a better site. The inclusion of new topics was not a decision we made over night, and it by no means it substitutes the culture and Latino identity coverage. As mentioned, you will find that we will be sharing the culture and human interest stories with Machochip. We chose to include Celebrity and Fashion commentary because we believe we can cover those topics in a way that is smart and fun for you to read. While these topics are new to us I strongly believe that over time it is areas of the site that you will come to love. Maybe not, and if that’s the case tell us how to make it better. We really hope you can stick around to see what we have in store for you.
With much love to our readers,
Daniel
The comments for this post have been the most interesting thing I have read on this site in weeks. See below for my personal favorites. All of which had me laughing despite my wicked cruda.
“I’m so confused, I thought that pic was of a stingray…”
“… and somewhere out there, Rebekah is spinning in her grave.”
“Um, did you just discover the internet? Wait, I know … you must be a member of that isolated Brazilian tribe we’ve been hearing about in the news? Well, if you are in fact a tribal member, I’d like to be the first to welcome you to the internet.”
One more thing-Why did I get this link from one of my white fuck buddies and not you guys???
http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/ss/opinion/85853.php
I read it and immediately clicked on you my dear guanabee to see what all of us would have to say and I found nothing.at.all.
yes poca chica
thats been my beef all along with this blog.its fun to bash successful latinas cuz they have big egos and big asses but do the real work and talk about the way the white devil society keeps latinos down..especially these days.no one wants to talk about that..its more fun to cover latin rock than latin pain!!!! whatfuckinever bitches!!!!
@ dickster: The only latin pain here is you. If you dislike the site so much, for the love of baby jesus, please leave.
ouchie u got me the truth stings
i am going back to craigslist escort section w4m
While you’re there in w4m, just explain your undying love for jlo’s talent and huge heart. I’m sure your more than gay love for jennifer lopez will win over any straight woman in the blogosphere. happy hunting.
ooooohhh that hurt sooo bad…double ouch …you are so clever and witty.no wonder yhey need to switch demo
Why the hate by dissing on my site? Guanabee and VL are completely different and that’s ok. No me diga that there isn’t enough room in the blogosphere for varied Latino voices?
awww, changes….
good luck guanaeds…
hmmm. I might as well go to
http://www.latina.com
since the latino blog scene has died a wintery death.
