Holy Chic: Cristiano Ronaldo Makes Us Wonder What's Up With Guys And Rosaries
In the 80s, Madonna wore rosaries as accessories while singing about feeling like her hymen was perfectly intact - and a lot of people followed suit. More recently, Amy Winehouse has seen it fit to wrap this symbol of faith and repentance betwixt her clavicle and bra straps as she took scenic walks in the dead of night while high out of her mind on crack. Now, Cristiano Reinaldo has been photographed wearing a rosary on vacation in Italy with his stupid girlfriend.
Our ever-observant managing editor, Cindy, noted she saw a gaggle of thuggish teen boys wearing 2 or 3 rosaries each in Alphabet City. So, being the arbiters of good taste that we are, Guanabee had to ask:
What the fuck are you doing, people?
This is like wearing a Virgen de la Guadalupe airbrushed baby-t over a thong crafted entirely out of Tibetan prayer beads: Super cute, but probably not in the best taste. We’re trying to figure out why this is a trend and, because, we’re not happy until everyone around us is miserable and dressed in pleated-front khaki pants in midtown, how to put an end to it. Is this like the Loisaida-baby-thug version of that former Lower-East-Side hipster staple, the keffiyeh?
Have you ever worn a rosary as a necklace? Why do you hate Baby Jesus and all his angelitos? Stop it.

Thugs wear them for protection against the mean streets! Ronaldo wears his to protect him from all the Pu@#$y he gets from his love of hookers and all that may come from that propensity! Gay boys where them because Madonna wore them once and there is nothing better than retro Madonna especially now that she has gotten so serious about life and higher consciousness—we long for the days when she whored herself to DJ’s so they would play a sample of Like a Virgin—which is what this is all about right? the Virgin Mary and her super cool necklace that my Grandmother has prayed every day for the last umm 75 years! Regardless of why people wear Mary, she is making a comeback and that makes Jesus happy!

You’ve hit a sore spot with me, Guanabee: Madonna, that talentless hag with a penchant for self-promotion, and her 25-year “career” of appropriating various underground cultures and then taking credit as some sort of innovator. The 1984 rosary-wearing Madonna was no different. Just a cleaned-up version of what L.A. punk girls were wearing FOUR YEARS EARLIER.
Why wouldn’t rosaries-as-necklaces make a comeback? Just like everything else. Next year you’ll be wearing parachute pants and a fanny pack, thinking you look hot. Just don’t give Madonna credit.

When this happened the first time around, I used to ask people why they were doing it. Now I don’t care because usually the answer is, “I don’t know. It looks pretty.” Also, I’m not as religious as I used to be.
