Mexico City Subway System Gets Its Gay On
19 June 2008, 2:35 PM. By Guanabee Staff
We are consistently bemused by the disparate world views that exist between greater Mexico’s sexual conservatism and Mexico City’s sexual tolerance. Within a country that beats up its teenagers for wearing their hair a little gay, resides its capital city–one of the first in the world to legalize gay marriage and now host to a subway station art exhibit entitled “Familias Mexicanas” by photographer Oscar Sanchez. The photos feature local same-sex couples in their homes and hangs in the Centro Medico station for every man, woman and child to see until June 30th. Blogger and Los Angeles journalist Daniel Hernandez reports:
In the image above are Alfonso and Ruben, who according to the exhibit materials first met when Ruben was 11 and Alfonso was 18. Seven years later they ran into each other on the train, and immediately became a couple. They’re in an “open relationship,” hence the guy in the middle. Also, I noticed they’re both wearing the Star of David.
Gay and Jewish. Radical. After the jump are two more images from the exhibit.
Hernandez also noted that he ran into two guys making out in the stairwell of the subway on his way home. He snapped a picture, too. Awww, lurf.

18 and 11? Skeeeeetccchhhh…..
I hate the Mexico City subway, mostly because connection between two lines sometimes require you to walk 2 miles, ad when its hot as balls outside and you need to get from the South Bus Terminal to the North Bus Terminal in an hour with a suitcase/backpack…. its just not plez.
Wow. This kind of blows me away (and not in the same way that Blurry-face is getting blown away by Alfonso and Ruben, but lemme tell ya…
If you stop to think about it, this is freakin’ extraordinary on several levels, first because it’s that Great Wacky Macho Catholic Country, Mexico. But to see ANY city that has a photo of a same-sex, hubba-hubba, in-bed three-way in a public exhibition? That sounds like a town where I should be getting blown away on a regular basis . . . while hopefully not getting kidnapped or anything.
I spent a lot of my childhood in Mexico City, but I never saw anything like this. I guess I never got off the Metro at the stops of Pino Sodom or Avenida Gomorrha.
Mexico is so weird.. Its like The Netherlands of Latin America only with more murders and kidnappings. I don’t mind Mexico City subways; its Avenida Chapultepec thats got me scurrred…
If you think that’s radical, then you need to check these pics from Guadalajara pride. I really like the pic in which a small girl is posing with a topless transgender. Both are posing for the girl’s parents.
