We always said we would cry if Barack Obama got to run for president because, hell, it’s a beautiful thing to watch a Black man overcome prejudice in this country. But now that the moment may well be upon us, we are suffering from the dead horse syndrome a little. Not to mention the fact that, for our money, it would have been more historic to see a woman running for president. (If you don’t believe us, just watch the comments.) Either way, here’s Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews on MSNBC paying reverence to this presumed moment after all the major networks declared Barack Obama the presumptive winner of the Democratic nomination earlier tonight. Hillary Clinton still hasn’t actually conceded, of course. But that’s not going to stop anyone from making dramatic TV.

I have to say that I think it’s just wonderful when white people take all the credit for being there and pushing along oh so gently the historic moments involving blacks, whether they be blacks from South Africa or the ones formerly known as “nigras” and “coloreds” of the United States It’s actually quite sweet, how excited the white pundits are by this astonishing moment in our nation’s history, that their spines get all tingly (and no, that is not because of the crack of an overseer’s whip), that the brain synapses fire on all cylinders while their blood is aflame (not because they’d just received a jolting hit of smack, or received the sinuous injection of poison while strapped to the gurney in the deathhouse), that they just shit their pants and creamed their jeans (and not at the behest of a john who had just picked them up from the beat-down streets). Whites have been helping the black man along for decades now, and it is rewarding to see all of their hard work come to fruition. After all, did we not see the strong white hand plucking the trembling black from the raging waters of Katrina (thank you, oh mighty Sean Penn), I’m glad to see the faces of white pundits turn red with joy. It truly makes all the centuries of suffering that blacks had to endure worthwhile. Here’s to centuries more, so that whites all across the country could feel exonerated and damn fine about themselves!
