Well, it’s that time of year again, kiddies. When the White people of New York City’s posh Upper East Side batten down the hatches in preparation for the storm of pride-driven, sexual violence that is the New York City Puerto Rican Day Parade. This week’s New York Magazine gives us the report from above 59th street:
Fifth Avenue co-ops stopped boarding up their façades for the National Puerto Rican Day Parade after Mayor Bloomberg gave them a stern warning—and promised additional cops—in 2005. But that doesn’t mean the entire Upper East Side will stay open for business this year on the day of the parade, June 8. Via Quadronno at Madison Avenue and 73rd Street, where hedge-funders, socialites, and media moguls—including Martha Stewart—get their $4 espressos, closes for just four days each year: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and a certain spring day.
A spokesman claims coincidence. “We close that day every year for internal construction,” he says. “The last day of the first week of June.” The Puerto Rican Day Parade is on the second Sunday of June each year. “They tell you the day before—they whisper it—‘Don’t come tomorrow,’” a well-heeled regular says. “The clientele starts clucking a few days beforehand, ‘This weekend, you know … ’”
Oh, WE know. That is to say, stay tuned for Guanabee’s coverage of the most Puerto Rican Day of the year. And send us your incriminating photographs, videos and Craigslist ads. ¡Boricua!

I have spent all week fielding stupid questions about the Puerto Rican Day Parade from random people at work. Here’s a PSA for all those dumbasses:
1. No, I’m not Puerto Rican
1a. Yes, I’m pretty sure I’m not Puerto Rican.
2. No, I have never been to that parade.
3. I have no connection to that parade whatsoever. I’m not Puerto Rican, I’ve never been there, I didn’t invent it for God’s sake. Why do I have to “tell you about it”?
4. No, not all “Latinas” go to that parade.
5. No, I’m not “still going to celebrate”, I don’t even know what the parade is for, anyway.
6. No, I don’t think it’s “Puerto Rican Independence Day” that day. Puerto Rico is still a colony, remember?
7. Again: Yes, I am sure I am not Puerto Rican. I’m Dominican, actually.
8. No, not all Dominicans are black, but thanks for the stereotype!
10. No, I don’t know if “Puerto Ricans that went to college” go to this parade.
11. No, I didn’t grow up in the US, so I didn’t grow up going to that stupid parade.
12. No, I don’t know why all Puerto Ricans are “like that”. Last time I checked it’s pretty reductive and prejudiced and fucked up to generalize about an entire nation based on a single event attended by a few thousand people.
Ahh. That’s better. Nice to get it off your chest, isn’t it?
Ba-bye!!

LMAO I can’t count…I skipped #9!!!!!!
9. Yes, I’m a dumbass that can’t make a numbered list properly.

Colony? Maybe for the UN, but according to the Constitution, PR is a territory in transitional period towards statehood or independence. Yes, they were war-booty, but hey, citizenship, no federal taxes, and free $300 checks courtesy of the real tax payers!!! Colony, heck no, paradise!
Posted by Sam | June 07, 2008
@ Sam: good luck with that “transitional period” thing. How long has that been going on, since 1898?
Posted by hi! | June 07, 2008
actually Boricuas have taken the most racial abuse from U.S. society in the past 70 or so years.more so than mexicans and certainly more than cubans.
At the end of the day its all about the Jets and the Sharks!!! peoples…
Posted by dickster queso boy | June 07, 2008
Nope actually since 1950 look for “E. L. A.” and check before you talk

Oh wao, just 58 years!!!! congrats with that, my dear…

Wow, why all the hating on Puertorricans? From the “J-Lo being a standard gives me vapors” to the “Puertorrican day parade terror” blog posting to the reader comments. Whats your problem?
@ “Hi” I don’t know if you are a bitter acomplejado boricua or an envidioso non-boricua latino, but as far as your sad attempt @ sarcasm regarding what you call our “transitional period” regardless of how long its been, I’d have to say it’s very cushy. We are born US citizens, we can travel back and forth between the island, have the same access to US public services and are granted the same privileges under the US constitution as any American etc. Puerto Rico is full of riffraff to the same degree of most other nations. Having said that, if I was to chose between being a loser project dwelling janitor puertorro in da Bronx, an indigent Mexican that has to cross the horrible dessert border while attempting to avoid the minuteman in a futile attempt at making a little bit of money, or for that matter, a Cuban balsero crossing shark infested waters just to get a whiff of freedom in Florida, I’ll have to say I choose being the “wao just 58 years!!!” Puertorro any fucking time.
@ Sam, most Island dwellers may not have to pay federal taxes come April, but they still get them deducted from their work paychecks! besides, our state taxes are pretty steep. Florida residents don’t pay state taxes but pay the federal one instead so its the same crap. Also unless a special situation applied to you, residents of PR did not qualify for the refund check.I do have to agree with your Colony-no, paradise-yes statement.
@ dickster queso boy, are you living in a fucking time warp? what kind of idiotic survey had you made up to come up with your silly statements? Racial abuse? so we are a race now you fucking twat? I find it funny that morons like you like to place the victim label on selected groups to make themselves feel better. Jets and Sharks?! No, baby. Its just that you are a piece of shit.
BTW, the Puertorrican parade nowadays consists mostly of african american hoodlums, Dominicans and Nuyoricans who are at least 4 generations removed from the island. It is just a big fat opportunity for loser white Americans, and some Latin nationals to cast a particular group in a pretty unfavorable light in order to make themselves feel better.

whoa i gotta get in on this! what i want to know is why a majority of puerto ricans consider themselves white race wise instead of black because they live amongst blacks and have jacked the hell out of our swag! look around and i bet you will see a guala with cornrows, baggy jeans, ebonics like hell, yet on an application when it asks your race, 80% will say white…

@ dickster queso boy: (AKA Usmail)
Projecting much? Are you sure it wasn’t your welfare momma sucking dick for three dollars on the streets of the ghetto? What the fuck is Hunters Point? Do you assume every Puertorrican lives in the hood like you do? Sorry baby I’m not familiar with your hood. It does sound like you grew up with apes. When you say your people, are you referring to chimps? Because I doubt most Puertorricans would include you in an “our people” discourse. Did your family emigrate to NY from La Perla or Canales? Enano, sorry to inform you that you are one of those SPICS who give us island PRs the shivers, you are no Puerto Rican, you are just another moronic ghetto American from the hood who gives us a bad name. I’m glad you are enjoying the welfare and have the chance to rant in a blog soon to be geared towards young females but I think you are way too old to roam cyberspace. BTW, of course I don’t know what it is to be called a spic to my face, first because I’m not a piece of shit from the hood like you brag to be, and second because why would anyone? I don’t live or roam questionable neighborhoods where the riff raff has to engage in racial turf wars, plus if any of those Micks or Ginnies (Jesus what are you, 60?) happen to lay eyes on me their reaction would be quite different than the one they had for you. I know you probably hate attractive woment too and would probably try to beat me up if we were having this exchange face to face (did your hooker mommy tell you its okay?) but to put your fantasy to rest, I could beat your welfare ass as I do more than sit in front of the computer and TV complaining about how bad white Americans are. To be honest, maybe the reason you’ve had to fight your way out of pizza parlors is because you are a paranoid shithead who keeps giving dirty looks to people you deem better than yourself. People can pick up crazy vibes you know…
About my armpits, oh honey I don’t shave them, I have them waxed along with my pussy @ the J. Sisters Salon. Oh, and about me sucking dick? whether black, white, latino or middle eastern, it is ALWAYS high class dick, but for your information, my preference is white or “blanquito” Puerto Rican dick, and it has to be hard and big, unlike your small softie salchichita. I can assure you I do an incredible job, and of course I always get the favor returned by my current partners. You will never know because you couldn’t afford even one of my discarded pubic hairs.
@ guala getter: Eh, what? Gualas? what kind of fucked up stupid slang is that? I don’t know about the “Puerto Ricans” you apparently live with (who are exclusively surrounded by blacks? um Okay) But as far as I’m concerned you can have your ugly cornrows, your infantile baggy jeans and your cheap swag back, we didn’t want it in the first place. I used to live in the south and the blacks I was surrounded with were very well dressed and usually held post-graduate degrees and pretty cushy jobs, so thanks for the stereotyping.
I am curious, are you the “application fill out” gestapo? because what I want to know is how the hell you are able to come up with these race identification space numbers (80%? really? how many Puerto Ricans did you use as a number for your study?) Do you hover over every Puerto Rican’s shoulder while they fill out an application and check what they choose? Man, that is crazy because there’s at least 5 million of us in the island and 3 million who identify as boricuas in the good ole US of A. Thats a lot of application screening.

AS A PUERTO RICAN I AM DEEPLY OFFENDED BY THE INSULTS TO MY PEOPLE. WE DO HAVE PLENTY OF EDUCATED PUERTO RICANS WHO ACT LIKE CIVILIZED PEOPLE AND DON’T HAVE TO USE CURSE WORDS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES DUE TO THE VAST VOCABULARY THEY HAVE AQUIRED.
WE DO NOT ALL HAVE A “GHETTO” MENTALITY.
I RESPECT ALL OTHER CULTURES ESPECIALLY THOSE OF EUROPEAN BACKGROUND BECAUSE MANY DIFFERENT EUROPEANS COLONIZED PUERTO RICO (AND THATS WHY WE HAVE MANY FAIR-SKINNED PEOPLE IN PUERTO RICO).THESE INCLUDE FRENCH,SCOTISH,ITALIAN,SPANISH,GERMAN AND POLISH.
SO LETS CONTINUE TO BE PROUD PUERTO RICANS WHILE RESPECTING OTHER CULTURES AND KEEP OUR VOCABULARY CLEAN! IT’S NOT NESSESARY TO USE “F” WORDS TO EXPRESS OURSELVES, THAT ONLY BRINGS US DOWN ANS WE’RE MORE THAN THAT!
I LOVE YOU ALL!

Wow, I’m amazed by how ignorant some of these comments are. No wonder hispanics make up such a large portion of the US population but still can’t manage to get ahead. Instead of building one another up, we tear eachother down. I am Puerto Rican and I do not just embrace my culture but also the cultures of all of my latino brothers and sisters. Please understand that there are people out there that do not like latinos and they could care less if you are Puerto Rican, Dominican, Colombian, Cuban, Mexican or of any other hispanic denomination. To those people, we are all SP*CS. Please beleive that if I ever saw you on the street and you needed help, I would help you in anyway I could. So, where ever you are from always know that you have at least one Puerto Rican sister out there. 1 love and many blessings to all of you.
Viva Puerto Rico, Republica Dominicana, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela and any other country that I left out because the list is just too long.

Wow I was just tryin to find some photos to send my brother of the parade and came across this site. Since everyone is commenting I couldnt pass it up.
From what I see, most Ricans try to blend in our, white, communities and erase their Hispanic heritage. It’s sad. I would sex a sexy Puerto Rican lady but not marry and have kids with, nope just have a little fun. I think next to the blacks they hate their race and culture just as much. I see them at work tryin to asimulate and seriously, it’s halarious, it’s just like when the blacks do it (even worst).
I love the parade, I’ve watched it for the 3 years I’ve been in this place and truly haven’t witnessed one problem. It’s loud, but aren’t all parades? Embrace your heritage it’s a cool one and leave ours alone. My grandparents came here from Iceland and there is NOTHING exciting about our culture.
This is mainly directed to the cock sucker, Boricua Biatch, that said she likes the white boy dick. At the end of the day, you’ll never be white no matter how many white or near white guys you are with.
Posted by Whiteandproud | July 03, 2008
Whiteandproud, I did not see where she felt that she considered herself white. If she happens to like white men, it’s a preference. We all have prefrences when it comes to who we decide to date.
You are correct, Puerto Ricans are not considered white. We are a mix of European, Spanish, and African ancestors. Just because some Puerto Ricans do not fit into the typical “NYC Puerto Rican” stereotype that a lot of people seem to have, it doesn’t mean that we are denying our race. It means that we know how to act civilized!
I am a Puerto Rican and I am proud to be a latina. However, I will never attend the Puerto Rican parade! I do not understand why some Puerto Ricans think that having no manners, dressing like a hoodlum, and having vicious pitbulls as pets is within the means of our culture. The rest of America is laughing at you…
Let’s rise above the stereotypes, educate ourselves, and show the rest of the world that we are (TRULY) proud to be Puerto Rican!
Posted by unraveled | September 03, 2008
whiteand proud..ahhh there’s that white ego, didn’t take long to find it….why does it seem every white person thinks people want to be white???? (this is especially hilarious coming from an icelandic person-but that is another topic). how about this for a FACT, stop getting your ideas from the media. not all blacks, latinos, and asians hate themselves. and SURE AS HELL we love ourselves and DON’T want to be white-that has never crossed my mind and god as my witness-it NEVER will….when people bring up the topic of who hates themselves, white people should definitely be thrown into that mix, especially white women…eating disorders, plastic surgery addictions, “tanorexics”, and so on and so on…doesn’t that sound like self hate to you? ohhh but i forget, there’s a double standard there, right…and so if someone doesn’t fit into your definition (stereotype) of what a “puerto rican or black” person should be, then obviously they want to be white…lol…that’s really, really sad in so many ways. and what is “american” culture anyways? about a thousand different cultures blended into one….so there is no set definition on how someone is SUPPOSED to act. obviously, you need to crawl out of your hole and get to know other people and cultures and stop watching so much tv…
loveeee♥

How would you know if Boricua is not White ? Do you know her ? In any event, there are very many White Ricans. I am one of them. Get your Nordic ass educated about Puerto Ricans before making such comments.

This an open letter to the very many Ricans here who know little or nothing about their respective racial identity. Contrary to popular misconceptions, not all Puerto Ricans are mixed with Black, or even Taino. During the 1800s, the crown in an edict called La Cedulia de Gracias, granted free land to many Europeans. This enticed French,Corsican, Irish,German. and Scottish people to settle Puerto Rico,

I still cannot believe people do not understand that just as in the US, people in PR come from different places, there are whites, african americans, asians, mixed people (of taino and african descent). It is sad, there is argument among us about it. We may all come from different places but we are all Boricuas. I don’t get it!
