If you didn’t know this was coming, you’re more naive than the poor hack who wrote Barack Obama’s Puerto Rican campaign commercial: two passengers on Emilio Navaira’s tour bus the night of his fateful accident last Easter are suing him. The reason, of course, is that he nearly killed them by drunkenly slamming into a freeway median and, in the case of one of the plaintiffs who is a bandmate, Navaira succeeded in destroying his livelihood by landing himself in a coma.

Daniel Sandoval, drummer with the Grupo Rio band, and Pedro Perez, a relative of another band member, are asking for unspecified damages from Emilio Inc., the singer’s corporate alter ego. The suit, which does not name Navaira individually, was filed last week in Houston and assigned to the district court of Judge Caroline E. Baker.

The Houston Chronicle goes on to note that immediately following the crash last March, Sandoval said in an interview, “I don’t know if Emilio fell asleep, but he is in my prayers. I don’t blame him for nothing,” but time and the realization that your friend is a careless drunk with three DWI’s on his record can change everything. We wonder how much time and how many persuasive, salivating lawyers until the rest of the band–including Emilio’s brother pictured with him above– follow suit. No pun.
