Beyond The Barrio: Listen Up, New Yorker. Here's How Australia Does Satire.

Good satire is hard to accomplish, as the controversy surrounding the recent The New Yorker cover featuring Barack and Michelle Obama demonstrated. It’s especially difficult to deal with issues like racism in a way that’s funny and not heavy-handed. Luckily for us, there’s comedian Chris Lilley (who, omg, totally kind of maybe looks a wee bit like Diego Luna). He plays three separate characters on “Summer Heights High,” a mockumentary TV series set in an Australian high school. One of the show’s main characters, 16-year-old Ja’mie King, was also featured on “We Can Be Heroes,” another mockumentary series that. Is. Hilarious. Watch as overachieving Ja’mie competes for the title of “Australian of the Year” by sponsoring no less than 85 African children, which she names things like “Smiley” and “Brown Eye” because she can’t pronounce their names.
