Did You Know Cockfighting Was Legal In New Mexico Until Last Year?

The New York Times did a story this weekend about how cockfighting in New Mexico became illegal last year, so it’s effectively had to go underground. In the above video, two former New Mexico cockfighting moguls complain about having to find some other way to make money. One woman says she put her kids through college with cockfighting and a New Mexico sheriff claims that Bill Richardson ignored animal rights activists on the issue for years until he decided to run for president. But more importantly, did you know that cockfighting was legal anywhere in America? Obviously if you live in New Mexico, you probably did. According to the article, it’s still legal in Louisiana until August, which, coming from Louisiana doesn’t really surprise us except that we never thought this was a state’s rights issue. We mean, shouldn’t the federal government be regulating this shiz? (Of course, they can’t even regulate the tomatoes.) Also, who here has been to a cockfight? Fess up.

I may or may not have attended a few peleas de gallos which may or may not have taken place in the United States.I see no problem with cockfighting. They’re domesticated animals! They’re animals that without humans have no purpose and would die. Law enforcement is doing citizens a disservice by going against those who choose to put their investments at risk and possibly lose them.
This is an example of a too-powerful animal “rights” (animals don’t have rights and never should) lobby imposing its beliefs on others. These bans are destroying parts of the economy! It makes no sense.
Legalize cockfighting and rodeos. Don’t grant rights to animals.
weird i was in New Mexico (ABQ) last week!
anyway I’ve been to a cockfight it was in mexico though. it’s kind of exciting!
Also in mexico i’ve seen a few different times, ballet folklorico groups performing the song Pelea de Gallos(aguascallientes) and having a cockfight in between the song.
