Ingrid Betancourt: The Movie!
8 July 2008, 4:00 PM. By Daniel Mauser
Itching for a big screen version of Ingrid Betancourt’s rescue from Farc rebels? Well, jerk, you’re in luck! Vertigo Entertainment and RCN, a Colombian television network, have teamed up to create a movie version of the headline-grabbing rescue. Whether it’ll be a thriller or romantic comedy co-starring Eva Mendes remains to be seen, as there are still no writers attached to the project. Trivialities, really. So, why Vertigo and RCN as opposed to some huge Hollywood studio?:
While many in Hollywood were vying for the rights to the dramatic story, Vertigo had the inside track on securing the rights due to the company’s relationship with RCN. Vertigo worked with RCN to secure remake rights to the Colombian film “Al Final del Espectro,” and has set up the project at Universal with the working title “At the End of the Spectra”.
Also no word on how big the production of the film will be, nor on who will nab the role of Betancourt. Although we do have a suggestion.
We’re hard pressed to come up with a good, and potentially money-making, Latina actress who could really do justice to the role. We hope it doesn’t turn into some flashy production starring Salma Hayek (not that she’s terrible, but come on). But maybe you, reader, can highlight someone out of the mainstream eye? Who would you cast as Ingrid?
