New French’s Ad Uses Mariachi Food For No Apparent Reason
9 July 2008, 5:15 PM. By Guanabee Staff
This ad is completely ridonkulous on every level. So ridonkulous that the accompanying mariachi jingle is actually the least nonsensical thing about it. It features a hotdog and a bottle of French’s mustard on a date at a restaurant. (Because, you know, food eats.) The French’s bottle is eating a salad and the hotdog is, like, sweet talking the French’s bottle. Which is kind of sad when you realize that she will be complicit in his demise later on down the line. (Love’s a bitch.) Then, of course, there’s the fact that the three mariachis are played by a pretzel, a hamburger and a hoagie. And the entire spot climaxes with a celebratory, No-Mess Cap grito. Some copywriter just returned from a spring break in Cabo when they wrote this winner.

i hate how they trivialize mariachi when it is such an important part of the history /culture of another country
I’ve dealt with this attitude towards mariachi way too many times, mostly when I’ve performed at parties with largely upper-class people. I no longer care for it.
That was truly baffling…
Y’know, I don’t know why you people are picking on this adorable spot. I’ve got it on a loop, and the Frito Bandito hasn’t stopped dancing all morning!
And please don’t dispute that a hoagie could play music. Need I remind you of…Hoagie Carmichael? BONZAI!
I actually think it’s sublime.
Love it! Why so serious? Some commercials are just meant to be stupid and thereby, funny!
