Open Shirts. Why?

Readers, barely literate or otherwise, we have a question that maybe one of you can answer: What is it with Latino men wearing shirts opened to the navel?

It’s a phenomena we first encountered in high school, dating a boy from Mexico City. We’d go out wearing our very best Spandex-cotton blend flared jeans and slutty Lycra top from Rampage and he’d show up with slicked-back hair and a striped, button-down shirt opened to reveal his entire chest.

“This is how we do it in the DF,” he explained as we dried our tears, sitting low in the front seat in the hopes that no one we knew would recognize us as we drove past the mall.

Who are they doing it for? We’ve never particularly been fans of men’s chests, although we guess we could see the appeal. Even so, doesn’t it seem weird to air it out for all the world to see, like extremely low-cut shirts for women that show underboob or sideboob or pancakeboob? Are women attracted to this look? Is it for themselves? Or other men? And what’s the “best” look: A veritable forest of hair or a smooth chest, perhaps because one is a mere teenager taking his girlfriend to a movie and then perhaps, if we feel like, splurging, to Wendy’s for a Frosty?

Please. Help us understand.

Smooth chest, hair slicked back and greasy - maybe even stricking up in the back, shineySILK shirt only - in black or blue, opened to the navel of course, out with his boys, wearing his good club shoes, and making kissing lips at me all night and winking….

    Ooh baby. Just like that.

It’s like directions. Later in the night, after you’ve downed a couple of Zima’s, you follow the happy trail. BINGO!

Hilarious and so true. My older brother’s friends came around and looked like this… to this day, I’m asking: WHY? WHY? add the gold chain and it’s just so wrong.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Maybe it’s a custom left over from the hot weather where they come from.
