Covering the Coverage: Brazilian Men Who Chop Up British Women Are "Lovers," Not Fighters

Mohamed D’Ali Carvalho Santos, a Brazilian man who confessed to slaughtering and chopping up a British woman, Cara Burke, smiled for cameras while leading police officers to her remains. And, because this is the internet and we’re all here to read about dismemberment and violence against women, here are some grisly details about the murder:

A reporter from local newspaper Hoje Noticia, asked: ‘How did you feel while you were mutilating her?’ Dos Santos allegedly replied: ‘Nothing, just like cutting beef, except for the bleeding.’
Asked why he took photographs of himself dismembering the body, he is quoted as saying: ‘I took them to send to a Brazilian friend in England, who she (Cara) had stolen money from. He said he was going to kill her.

Technology really brings people together.

‘I was going to send them to him by email to show that although he didn’t have the courage to do it, someone here did.’
Murdered: British teenager Marie [Ed. note: We’re not sure why they named her “Marie” here…] Burke, 17, was reportedly stabbed to death before being decapitated

The 20-year-old also said he made a mistake by leaving the suitcase containing Cara’s torso by a river bank.
He said: “I made a mistake, the suitcase was supposed to fall in the river. If it had fallen in the river nobody would have found it, as they haven’t found the head and the other parts.”
Police say Miss Burke was murdered by Dos Santos after she had threatened to expose him as a drug-dealer.

What a courageous young man. So, while it’s fairly obvious that what he did was horrific, we’re going to take a step away from the story itself and comment on how it’s been presented to us. Just an observation, ok? Bear with us.

Dos Santos is described in the headline as a “Brazilian Lover.” Not by his name, not as a Brazilian man. Not as her boyfriend, even. But as a lover. Why is this a problem? It makes him less of a person, an entity in his own right, and more of a passive, receptive object belong to someone else. In this case, he is t”he murdered woman’s lover.” Which also paints a picture of him as a purely sexual, one-dimensional being who is solely defined by the fact the 1) he’s Brazilian and 2) has sex. Which is basically redundant, no?

And, you know. Call us crazy, but we’re pretty sure he wouldn’t have been described as such had he been a White, British man.

This is obviously a very sick man, to say the least. Yeah, so, the woman was a thief. Theft is a crime and is wrong. He could have reported her to the authorities, and dealth with the matter through the proper channels. But this hateful, vicious crime?? She did not deserve such a heinous death.

Both of them were trash. At least this way they won’t reproduce!
