Eva Mendes, who was raised Catholic by her Cuban parents, once thought about being a nun until she discovered they don’t get to do blow off the banquets of various clubs in L.A:
“I guess there is this little Catholic girl inside me somewhere. But I did want to be a nun when I was very little. Well, that was until my sister told me that they don’t get paid. Then, I went off the idea really quickly.”
Sad face! This makes us wonder, though: Why is it that almost everyone we know who was raised Catholic considered becoming a nun? Or a priest? Or the Messiah?
See, we fervently wanted to be a nun when we were around 8 or so (And, um. Up until we were about 14…) and we never really knew why. But looking back we think maybe, possibly the reasoning behind our decision was actually pretty simple:
Attending an all-girls, Catholic school? Made us scared shitless about ever having sex. And we thought becoming a nun would help us avoid awkward dates and having to discreetly attempt to buy morning-after pills right when our mom and grandmother and first grade teacher decided they’re going to all go to the same pharmacy to buy laundry detergent. Being married to Jesus didn’t seem bad at all in comparison. You’d know every dinner would have wine.
But what about you guys? Did you ever consider becoming a nun or a priest? And, if so, why?
Don’t front; it was so you could pose for sexy-hot calendars, wasn’t it? “Girls With Bad Habits, ‘08.”

I always found Eva to be sexy and interesting to the eye in her movies, but the fact she wanted to be a nun makes her more desirable…

I recall us having this conversation. Nun seems to be a very popular little girl goal, along with Princess and Barbie no doubt.
I actually watched a lot (A LOT) of HBO growing up, so I didn’t consider the nunnery to escape unwanted pregnancy or icky sexy awkwardness. I honestly just liked the idea of being cute and innocent forever. Like a little porcelain doll in a habit. I still consider the nunnery a serious option, unless I finally get that rich investment banker I’ve always been dreaming of.
I’ll probably become a nun, though.

PS—
I hate when celebrities mention that they wanted to be nuns—ie. Eva and Anne Hathaway. Most of them that about it for, like two seconds. Not at all like people like me who seriously considered it for more years than necessary.
Honestly, it’s like me saying I wanted to be an evolutionary biologist or astronaut as a kid. What does it mean anyway? What does wanting to be a nun for five seconds say about someone? Wanting to be a nun as a kid doesn’t make you nun-like or a good Catholic.

Gloria Trevi is another one that claims she wanted to be a nun as a child.

Did nobody learn that lesson from Sister Act?

Totes wanted to be a priest. I think its because we visited the priest in his house and it was NICE. And I thought being a priest in the Catholic Church would be a good way to have a great house without working for it. Also, they got to wear dresses and nice shoes.
I gave up the idea when I realized I wanted to get married. Go figure.
