A friend brought to our attention what sounds like a fairly interesting documentary about two of the most vilified (a strong word, sure, but we think an apt one) groups in America: Gays and Latinos. (Well. And/or young people.) Latino Beginnings sounds like an educational film about where Latino womb trolls come from, but is actually a documentary what it means to be gay and Latino in the U.S:
To be Latino in America is one thing, but to be a gay Latino is another. Norman Green’s documentary delves into this minority within a minority. Gay Latinos have to break through the added layer of religion and masculinity embedded in the Hispanic culture. Jesse, an openly gay college student; Marisol, a woman who’s nervous about coming out to her mother; and Gustavo, a drag performer, all share their thoughts and experiences.
We hadn’t thought much about it before, but we guess machismo can have a fairly big impact on how both gay men and women are perceived in some Latino communities. We wouldn’t be surprised if there was a consensus that “She doesn’t want to be with us? What kind of poor excuse for a woman is she?” among machista men when it comes to lesbians.
Obviously we have a soft and squishy place in our hearts for Gustavo, him being a hometown boy. The entire documentary is also available in its entirety on LOGO’s website, so you can watch it instead of doing work today. Yay!

Being a gay latino in america is like this; everyone thinks you are super horny and have romantic super powers. All the gheys want you in bed cause they think you will rock their whitebread world like never before…and its true, we will.

Those football players at Jesse’s school were pretty much a total embarrassment to humankind. “Do you want to vote for a cheerleader? Or a real leader… someone who was on the football team?”
Um, I’d vote for someone who has an IQ somewhere above -3, thanks.
