Here’s the deal: This shit wouldn’t be half so embarrassing if someone would catch, say, the Zimbabwean ping pong team doing it. But noooooo, puros Latinos. So, yeah, the Argentine women’s soccer team ALSO took a picture making slanty eyes and, you know, that short one in front looks like she may actually be Asian. In which case, we just give up.

The photo was published - without provoking controversy - in the Argentine sports newspaper Ole on Aug 5, to accompany a preview of the team’s first match of the tournament against Canada. It was taken more than a week before adverts featuring the Spanish men’s and women’s basketball teams in similar poses sparked international criticism.

The article, which we got from Machochip, goes on to say there was no indication that the team meant any offense. To which we say, bonus! Cuz you caused some anyway. Really, is America on the wrong track with this tolerance thing?

I can’t count how many times I’ve had this conversation. One friend made the distinction between “ignorant” vs. “racist.” But I find that a pretty empty distinction. And of course they never though their pictures would be offensive. Because racists never would think that. I don’t think we’re on the wrong track here at all.

I kinda confused why people consider Spaniards latino?

They are from Europe & the latin language was originated in Rome.

Not trying to knock anyone, please enlighten me if wrong.

Yeah, I don’t think they meant any harm like a racists kind of way. It was meant to be a joke. You have to understand Latin culture, In latin America and perhaps other parts of the world people aren’t often politically correct as we are in America. Maybe we Americans are sometimes too hyper sensitive. So I’m 100% sure it was more out of ignorance than anything else. I have family members in Spain and I’m married to an Argentine women. I my self am KoreanAmerican guy. latin culture is warm, friendly and they tend to joke alot.especially among themselves. You should hear the jokes they have for Spaniards and yet they are predominately Spanish/Italians mix with some German.
Sometimes its too much for an average American.
Rest of Latin America hates Argentines because they say they are arrogent because most of them are white.
Spaniards or Spanish (rom Spain) alot of stupid people think anyone who speaks Spanish is “Spanish.” Mexicans speak Spanish but they aren’t Spanish.Puerto Ricans speak Spanish but they aren’t Spanish. Anyway, Spanish are among the most friendly people I have encountered. French are bit reserved, Italians are friendly but some are drama queens.

In my opinion you are overreacting. The concept of racism and “politically correct” is different in Latin America than in the U.S. or other countries because historical circumnstances are different in every country or region. I agree with Vegabond: Americans are hyper sensitive to this. I’m sure those argentinian girls do that without any intention to offend chinese people. I can’t say the same of “John” and “Jose” whose comments are really offensive and only reflects a lot of ignorance. And for Andres: Latino refers to every culture who was influenced by ancient rome, specially in the language, thats why Italy, Spain and even France are latin cultures.

    Regards!

Alright, when you do it the first time, it’s okay, given the benefit of doubt. If you do it again and again, then it’s racist or aims to provoke.

    To Jose:

The Latin language originated in ancient rome in teh province of Latium (duh) which is now called Lazio where Rome is teh capital. Italians were the first Latins then conquered Spain , France and Portugal and brought Latin language and culture there which was then brought to Latin America.
Latin Europe= Spain, France, Italy and Portugal and
Latin America= Central and South America and Carribbean

As for Latinos, we are not all brown- we come in all different colors and sizes which makes us the most diverse ethnic population in the world.

And people do not hate Argentines. Are Argentinos admittedly more arrogant, ofcourse they are. But hate is a strong word.

A joke? Hypersensitve? I guess by your logic if I went up to a person of german ancestry and called him a kite or an italian and called him a wop or a spanish person and called him a wet back and laughed in his face he’d give me a hug? I think not!!

the majority or Argentines are white of Spanish, Italian, and German ancestry. there are millions of whites in all South American countries.

Argentines are disliked because of their inferiority/superioty complex. They constantly remind the world that they are European. No big deal, except that they do it as if to say — “We are better because we are not Indian.” Plus, they want to be bluebloods. It gets worse: Argentines in the States, in an effort to feel superior, compare themselves to the poor people that immigrate from Mexico and other countries. Laughable. All very weird — major physhological issues!! Plus, they talk about being Argentine all the time, their degrees, European looks, European customs, etc. etc. Nauseating. Who does this sort of thing? The closest other culture that I have witnessed doing this are Spaniards — who are looked down upon in Europe. Hmmmm????!!!

You don’t have to be malicious to be offensive. But that’s probably just my American, ethnocentric self speaking.

“Just jokes,” however, turn into rumors, which turn into stereotypes, which turn into racist remarks.
