While demolishing a bag of gummy worms this morning (we enjoy getting our day off to a healthy start), we began to wonder how real worms would taste, then recalled how our Mexican ex (our “Ex-ican,” if you will) went on and on about how he used to eat chapulines and escamoles and other words we were suspicious he was just making up on the spot. After mentally punching him in the huitlacoches, we decided to scour the internet to find a nice recipe for chapulines.

Behold, “Oaxaca Enchiladas:”

Oaxaca Enchiladas

About 1000 grasshoppers (the younger the better)

1/2 cup chili sauce

pinch of salt

garlic

onion

1 lemon

1 cup guacamole

6 tortillas

Directions: Soak the grasshoppers in clean water for 24 hours. Boil them, then let dry. Fry in a pan with garlic, onion, salt and lemon. Roll up in tortillas with chili sauce and guacamole.

Sounds pretty tasty, actually. We’ll leave it to you to let us know how terribly inauthentic this all is. In the meantime, check out our very favorite grasshopper recipe:

Coffee Grasshopper

3/4 oz coffee brandy

3/4 oz white creme de menthe

3/4 oz light cream

Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into an old-fashioned glass over ice cubes, and serve.

What? It still counts.
