Not Everyone Wants To Be A Mom: An Elephant Mom Rejects Her Baby, Makes Us Cry

A mother elephant at the Oregon Zoo rejected her calf almost as soon as he was born, Separated from his mom for his own safety, the little ephelump still cries out for her. Zoo staff have been trying to get the mother, Rose II, to bond with her baby before she loses her mothering instincts completely. But, you know. Maybe some animals were just never meant to be mothers. (Give us the elephant! We’ll feed him Cheerios and take him to Discovery Zone on his birthday!)

This is exactly like the last episode of “Mad Men” when Peggy rejected her baby after Don Draper advised her to do it and never look back. “This never happened,” he says. “It will shock you how much it never happened.”

Do I watch too much television?

She didn’t necessarily reject her baby… they artificially induced labor in her (WTF?!) & the baby was born non-responsive or not moving which obviously alarmed her into being what was interpreted as too rough with the calf. This is such a freaking weird story. What the hell is wrong with us that we no longer trust the birth process, not only in human women, but apparently in all species?!

Yeah, the baby elephant howling makes me really bummed out, but I didn’t realize that’s what Don Draper was talking about when he told Peggy that stuff. Now I’m worried about baby elephants AND whether I’m, like, stupid or something.

@escobar: Not only was he referring to Peggy’s baby, he was also referring to his own past which he left behind. (I have a theory he killed his father because he said in the last episode that his father beat him so hard all he could do was fantasize about the day he could murder him.)

@ La Llorona: Good woman, you are speaking my language! Come over on Sunday for the viewing party at my house. But you have to bring a small appetizer served with a toothpick in it a-la-1963. :)

@ EVERYONE: You guuuuuys!!! I’m still trying to get through the first season on DVD! Spoilertastic, all of you!

Dumbo! Fly away little guy!
