Spanish Baby-Jumping Festival Makes Us Giggle

Every year, the Spanish town of Castrillo de Murcia hosts a “baby-jumping” event as part of their “El Colacho” festival. The leaps are meant to exorcise demons out of the town’s small, disgusting, crying Hell-babies. Babies are arranged on mattresses and men, dressed up as devils, leap over them while hopefully not too drunk. It sounds like a lot of fun, if you’re an asshole. Here’s how they kick things off:

Beginning on the Wednesday before the festival, the two characters cavort around the town chasing people, terrorizing them with their whips and truncheons and generally causing trouble.

What fun! And, then, they fly through the air over screaming hobbits:

All children born since the previous year’s festival are laid out on mattresses on a street leading away from the church. The figures dressed as el Colacho then run out of the church and down the street, leaping over the mattresses. They represent all the concentrated evil of Castrillio de Murcia, cleansing the babies and making a hasty diabolical getaway.

Should one trip and actually fall onto a baby, the festival automatically transforms into Tomatina. And no one ever speaks of it again.

Here, young children are exorcised of their demons, a process which will continue through years and years of therapy.

The look on the babies’ faces says it all: Surprise? Fear? Confusion? Disgust? Flatulence?
