Just as it’s been revealed that Lisa Marie Presley is pregnant with twins, Priscilla Presley commented that she doesn’t want the duo to call her “Grandma.” Tough, Granny:
“We say ‘Nona’ — it means ‘grandma’ in Italian,” the Dancing With the Stars alum, 63, tells Entertainment Tonight.
“There’s just such a connotation with Grandma, and I just liked it better,” she adds. “[Lisa Marie’s children] say it so sweet: ‘Nona.’”
A rose by any other name, no?
Thing is, Priscilla is already a grandmother to Lisa Marie’s two previous children. Our own paternal grandmother insisted we called her “Nani” instead of abuela because the latter made her “feel old.” And, true, the word “grandmother” does bring up images of an old woman in a rocking chair wearing a shawl - or watching novelas on a recliner, smelling like talcum powder and Agua de Violetas. But a grandmother is not necessarily any age. And, at any rate, what’s wrong with being old? We get that there’s a difference between being old and feeling old but, honestly, it seems like it could be a potentially really nice period in life. Grandkids to fatten up and send home to their parents the minute they grow tiresome or uncute, watching trashy TV, not being expected to be sexy or on display for anyone…
Shit, we want to be a grandma. What do you think? Is being called “abuela” by grandkids a negative?
