9th Annual Latin Grammy Nominations Are Here, Queer

flex_9.10.08.jpg

The nominations for the 9th annual Latin Grammys are out and, wow, are they ever predictable. All the usual names are firmly in place — Juanes, Julieta Venegas, Cafe Tacvba, Liberace — as well as people we knew were “Latin” but not necessarily Latino - like Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli. Then there’s bands we heart, like Belanova and Babasonicos and PeopleWhitePeopleLike, like Manu Chao. And, um. That “Te Quiero” song by Flex, which is up for like 97 nominations.

That song. Has been stuck in our head. For like six fucking months.

Enjoy a sampling of the 17,234 different categories, after the jump:

I’m sorry Guanabee but the most predictable award going out is Gloria Estefan’s Person of the Year award. Juanes’ multiple nominations comes close though. The Best Alternative Album is one tough competition. Good luck to Heroes, Cafe, Julieta, Ximena and Flex!

Any recomendations on albums that I should listen too, that may or may not be part of the nominations?

@Juan: Lila Downs’ new album. I also recommend even though they don’t have an album out yet and aren’t Latin music (although the singer is from Arroyo, Puerto Rico) Cobralush: http://www.myspace.com/cobralush who are really fun.

tricky’s new one is sinister!

New Babasonicos album? What…I thought the newest one was Anoche.

What’s a good website to keep up with music from Latin America?

Okay, maybe I’m totally wrong but is Flex the same guy as Nigga? There used to be posters of him up all over Mexico City in the same font, except it said “Nigga.” Did he change his name for a U.S. audience? Is he still called Nigga in Latin America? I used to stare lovingly at his his picture while eating my Negrito pan dulce.

@Amanda

yeah, you’re right, in mexico he definitely goes by nigga! i guess he did change his name for the u.s. audience

Check out Alih Jey’s album Necia. She is truly the underdog this year, being the only independent artist nominated for a Grammy.

TE QUIERO FLEX

I LOVE YOU
