Hispanic Heritage Month: K S?
15 September 2008, 5:30 PM. By Guanabee Staff
You may have heard that today is the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, but what is the real meaning of this special time of year? As with all important life questions, we turn to the sage wisdom of Wikipedia for answers.
Hispanic Heritage Month is the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
So, you see, condescending, Hispanic TV specials are required by law. But how did our forepadres come to choose this particular date on the calandario?
September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.” [1] Public Law 100-402 authorizes and requests the President to issue an annual proclamation designating September 15 through October 15, as “Hispanic Heritage Month.”
October 12, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, also falls within this 30 day period.
Columbus? Don’t get us started on that motherfucker. As you know, unlike the rest of the media, everyday is Hispanic Heritage Month on Guanabee. So, in addition to cheesetastic coverage and highlights of what others are doing to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, you can also look forward to something even better from us: FREE SHIT. That’s right. Brush up on your beanerness, because those of you who know the most about being brown could find yourself awash in fabulous prizes. In the meantime, feel free to write in with your own tales of Hispanic pride. This month it’s all about you, gente.

Good luck on trying to drum up goodwill towards hispanics!
We are being used as a smokescreen for corrupt politics. Instead of focusing on issues that are tearing this country apart they are diverting attention to the hispanic population and making the masses blame us and simmer a hatred towards one culture not seen since Hitler made the Jews the scapegoat for Germany.
Maybe I’m just being pessimistic because Ive had one to many run ins with ignorant sacks of shit spouting illogical BS my way and this towards someone who was born and raised in Chicago IL.
I’m fed up with the general mouth breathing population, I hipe our election this year is a good one.
*venting*
So we have a whole government sanctioned month celebrating our cultural pride & heritage…but the minute the immigration debate is brought up, one of the most prominent arguments used by anti-immigration foes is that Latinos are unwilling to assimilate & that our insistence on holding on to our culture (disregard for a moment just how broad & ridiculous that statement is) poses a major threat to the integrity of American culture (whatever the hell that is). Am I the only one who finds this to be just a tad problematic?
P.S. I freakin LOOOOVE free shit. I know it’s sooo stereotypical but if you put the word “free” in front of anything it pretty much guarantees I’ll be there.
