A grassroots effort to educate the public on teen cough syrup abuse, “Five Moms,” is looking to the Spanish-speaking community to help get the word out about the possible dangers of cough medicine abuse. And not only on how, in just a few simple steps, you can turn cough syrup into sweet, sweet meth. Fun for the entire family:

“As a mother, foster mother, grandmother, and educator, I am committed to raising awareness about teens looking to their family medicine cabinets to get high,” said Five Mom Hilda Morales, a native Spanish-speaker from San Antonio, Texas. “Other members of the Hispanic community need information about this teen substance abuse behavior so we can prevent it.”

Show off. Although, truth be told, cough syrup abuse has been recorded as being much higher among non-Latino teens. Because we’re sure as hell not answering the door when the Census Man comes asking us about our drug use:

Patterns of misuse of non-prescription drugs varied among demographic groups. Females aged 12 to 17 were more likely than their male counterparts to have misused these drugs within the past year (2.3 percent vs. 1.5 percent). But among those aged 18 to 25, more males had misused these drugs in the past year than females (1.8 percent vs. 1.3 percent). Among all persons aged 12 to 25, the rate of past year misuse among whites (2.1 percent) was three times higher than among blacks (0.6 percent) and significantly higher than among Hispanics (1.4 percent).
