Presidents Yelling Day: Hugo Chavez Says, “Fucking Yankees, Go To Hell A Hundred Times!”

We were going to post a video of the Mexican Independence Day grito, but this one is, uh, a little more interesting. It’s Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, throwing the United States Ambassador to Venezuela, Patrick Duddy, out of his country by calling him a “fucking yankee” and telling him to “go to hell a hundred times.” You may have read about it when it happened last week. Heh, who are we kidding? No one reads. That’s why there’s YouTube. In the video, he also calls for his ambassador, Bernardo Alvarez, to leave Washington, D.C. You know, when you add to this the fact that Venezuela’s currently performing naval maneuvers with the Russians, we almost feel concerned. But, why exactly is Chavez yelling like a maniac–this time–and, more importantly, exactly what is he saying?

First the translation:

It’s 7:15. He has 72 hours, from this moment on, the yankee ambassador in Caracas, to leave Venezuela. In solidarity with Bolivia, and immediately, mister counselor Madoro, immediately send for our ambassador before they kick him out. Let him come back, our great friend Bernardo Alvarez. Let him return to the nation. When there is a new government in the United States we will send an ambassador. A government that will respect the countries of Latin America, the America of Simon Bolivar, dammit.

Fucking Yankees go to fucking hell a hundred times! Here we are the sons of Bolivar, the sons of Guaicaipuro!

Now why he’s doing this depends on who you are, but Chavez’s reasoning is that the United States is plotting to overthrow Bolivia and assassinate him. This is because Bolivian president Evo Morales threw the U.S. ambassador, Philip Goldberg, out of his country on September 10th for allegedly backing opposition groups that have been holding violent uprisings in that country. The activity has killed eight already, injured 20 and divided Boliva. Since Chavez’s speech, the U.S. has thrown the Bolivian envoy out of Washington and we’re sure would have thrown the Venezuelan ambassador out, too, but well, Chavez beat Bush to the punch.

Um, scary?

On the other hand, some speculators say that this speech is puffery designed to distract voters from two things. Inflation in Venezuela is the highest in Latin American with important elections about to take place and Chavez is also having to deflect lots of damaging headlines about violent crime and crumbling hospitals. Add to this a trial in Miami linked to a suitcase with $800,000 discovered in Buenos Aires, that allegedly held payment from Caracas to help Argentina’s president, Cristina Kirchner, win an election last year. Plus, the U.S. accusing Chávez of turning a blind eye to cocaine trafficking in Venezuela (but what else is new?), and you may have the makings of the usual Chavez drama queening. Either way, happy Hispanic Heritage Month.

I didn’t understand his “talk” as you did. “carajo” does not mean to me what you said he said. The point was, from my prospective, the American Ambassador has X amount of time to leave and he is asking his ambassador to go home before he gets kicked out. He also said when there is a government in Washington that respects Latin America we will send an ambassador. He also referred to the sons of Bolivar implying his pan Ibero American idea. He talks loud as hell but then that is why people are curious to hear what he has to say. Obama will be able to hold his own with Chavez, so let them talk. Venezuela is a small country with limited resources so they are no threat. I would worry about the Chinese who own our economy and have the strength and weapons to cause us great harm.
