Republican Officials Fernando De Baca And Didi Lima Resign After Making Comments On Why Latinos Hate Blacks Again

de_baca_9.29.08.jpg

Two GOP officials have resigned over some racially problematic comments. Fernando de Baca, chairman of the Republican Party in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, has resigned over several comments he made to BBC regarding what he perceived as Latino voters’ attitudes towards Black people. He noted that “Hispanics consider themselves above Blacks,” adding:

“The truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors. African-Americans came here as slaves.”
He said the Latino emphasis on hard work and family values and the Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion made the community naturally conservative.

We thought Latinos took long siestas and beat their children? God, why can’t anyone keep stereotypes straight! De Baca defended his comments by saying he meant this about older generations of Latinos — the kind that talk about having had Black friends while snidely noting someone’s “suspiciously” high cheekbones or “unruly” curls — as calls for his resignation sounded around him:

“Snippets were used to try and embarrass me,” Mr de Baca, 70, told the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
He said a “media circus” had developed that was obscuring the election issues.
“It’s time to step aside and let the candidates and the political races that are so important to this country and democracy be placed in focus,” he told AP.

Media circus!? Obscuring issues?! Whatever could he mean bikini photos, middle names, addiction to pain killers, children’s names, pig in lipstick?

Meanwhile, Didi Lima, a Republican spokesperson for a Nevada county, said:

“We don’t want (Hispanics) to become the new African-American community,” Lima told The Associated Press. “And that’s what the Democratic Party is going to do to them, create more programs and give them handouts, food stamps and checks for this and checks for that. We don’t want that.”
“I’m very much afraid that the Democratic Party is going to do the same thing that they did with the African-American culture and make them all dependent on the government and we don’t want that,” she said.

See? We’re the hardest-working laziest minority group around!

Anyway! The saddest part about this story is that, while de Baca makes a good point about the media’s coverage of this election and is probably correct about the attitude of certain Latinos (past and present) , he (and Ms. Lima) has sadly added to that circus, citing stereotypical attitudes that simplify a complicated (albeit manufactured) demographic and that works to detract from the real issues at stake in this presidential election… Whatever those might be.

Comments

Sorry, but I’m about to hijack the comments.

All of this (what they say) is wrong, wrong, wrong. I’d also like to note these quotes were made by Republicans, who (seemingly) are more likely to have a penchant for not living in the real world like the rest of us (but I digress). I need to take this opportunity to rant a teeny bit. There’s this notion that only some people can be racist, but, ha, we know that’s not true and everyone can be racist re: creed color, etc, cause who hasn’t experienced that gut-wrenching feeling from all types? So now I’m going to veer a little bit.

A lot of people also seem to be enjoying this notion that Latinos aren’t voting for Sen. Obama because he’s black. I think that’s a lot of bullshit, and that claim makes me feel frustrated and I am insulted by it for all Latinos on many levels. I finally came across an article that addresses that claim directly in this months Latina magazine, and I’d like to quote it directly, so sorry for the novel. I just think that it’s important to refute this notion. If anyone knows of any other articles please post them for me.

Brown vs. Black?

It was an explosive suggestion, though phrased gently: “The Hispanic voter - and I want to say this very carefully - has not shown a lot of willingness or affinity to support black candidates.” The speaker was Hillary Clinton’s campaign pollster Sergio Bendixen, quoted in an article in The New Yorker last January. And the comment has been widely cited to explain why Hispanics supported Clinton nearly 2 to 1 over Barack Obama in the Democratic primaries, and why Latinos might not vote for the first black major-party candidate in American history.

The problem? It isn’t true.

Greater name recognition seems to be the principal reason we supported Clinton; a June 2007 Gallup poll found that while 84 percent of Latinos surveyed knew of and had formed an opinion about Clinton, only 47 percent said the same about Obama. Add to that memories of a stable economy under her husband, a consistently strong Hispanic outreach effort and endorsements from influential Hispanic leaders, and it’s easy to see why she was buoyed by the Latino vote.

The truth is, we have a history of voting for African Americans; David Dinkins won 73 percent of the Latino vote in 1989 when he ran for mayor of New York City, and in ‘05, an estimated 65 percent of Latinos rallied around Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson. The same can be said for mayors Harold Washington in Chicago, Ron Kirk in Dallas and Roosevelt Dorn in Inglewood, California. In fact, when Obama ran for the Democratic nomination to the Senate in 2004, he won more Latino votes than his Hispanic opponent. The final nail in the theory’s coffin: At press time, a Pew Hispanic Center survey found that 66 percent of us support Obama. - K.R.N.

I have a feeling this guy is one of those New Mexicans who call themselves EspaƱolas or some shit because they claim to not have any Mexican heritage, only Spanish heritage. Yeah, there’s some serious self-hating going on in that state.

Being african american i have known for many years that latinos have always been just as racist if not more so than even the redest redneck. i dont know what or when mexicans conquered anything in the united states, but i do know that the reason these veiws are becoming more frequent is do to the illegal mexican problem. mexicans have always ridin the coat tails of blk during the civil rights movement, benifited from civil rights and NEVER help or sacrificed anything to help blacks. Mexicans have always crossed picketlines, undercut blks in labor pay and still call us “nigger” behind our back. White people will call you a nigger to your face at least so you know where you stand with thoses racist jerks, but mexicans are dangerous, they’ll befriend you, envy you and try to destroy you…all african americans need to be put on alert. note to lations: look up the “lost children of africa” slaves ships settled the world…drak skin doesnt make me inferrior to you, and thats whats tought in mexico. i sick of everyone calling mexico “our brothers to the south”. mexicans are racist

Funny, how the comments exactly reflect all the supposedly “racist” attitudes exposed by the article. ROTFLMAO!

Reply: Kevin

You are absolutely right, Mexicans are dangerous, evil, killing machines…they are the devil. When I was a baby someone stole my bottle I don’t know who it was, but I bet it was a mexican.

And yes you are absolutely right they never did anything during the civil rights movement, we all know the United Farm Workers Union is fake, we all know Cesar Chavez didn’t die from fasting so much to fight for equal rights, we all know Dolores Huerta has done nothing, and we all know Corky Gonzalez is only someone that was created by the candy factories to sell more candy. As a matter of fact Mexicans are myths, they are actually white racist people in disguise.

Yes in disguise. This is what I think Kevin I think you my friend are a fake. Only opening your ignorant mouth to feel better about everything you don’t know. You my friend are a victim of society, desperately seeking conflict to feel better about you’re poor sorry self. I imagine your about ten years old, I might be a year or two of, I determined your age by your illogical reasoning. To say the comments of two idiots reflect a community as a whole, is like saying your dumb ass represents a community as a whole. This is not a Black on Brown issue this is a idiot on idiot issue. MLK (Martin Luther King) was assassinated a week prior to his announcement that the two fronts of the Civil Rights movement were going to UNITE. Blacks/African-Americans/Americans of African decent and Hispanics/Latinos/Chicanos were going to march together. In many parts of our cities they were already fighting together.

Now listen up Chaotic Kevin, you claim that in Mexico they teach hate of blacks, hahahaha that’s even more ignorant than your rant on them not contributing in any to the civil rights movement. Did you know Mexico has deep roots in Africa. Many Africans landed in the coasts of Mexico, have you ever wondered why so many parts of Mexico, especially the coasts are inundated with black complexions? The music, the food and so much more are influenced by African blood.

You are a fake and your only desire is create tension between the two communities, but you shall fail because you lack the intelligence. The ideal of equality shall overcome your racist soul. Just look around you, the world is mixing and diversifying, it is inevitable.

You know what I bet you are one of those racist skinheads who go on comment postings and rant off random ass racist shit in hope of dividing the two communities, but sorry you can’t they both live in me. I am proud of my diverse heritage and will proudly stand as an American who can call himself Black and Chicano.

My racist friend if all you need is a hug, I’ll give it to you. If all you need is attention I’m giving it to you. If all you would like is to be heard I am listening. What will your racist rants accomplish; absolutely nothing and if you don’t believe me just ask Didi Lima she is now jobless and her reputation out the door and all for being like you. There is nothing in it for you. You get nothing for being an ignorant racist. How very sad.

hear this Black and Brown Say it proud
whether you blv it or not, i know for a fact idiot. ive done consulting work in mexico on and off for the government for over 10 yrs. ive talked to the people, my sister in-law is born and raised in mexico….so its not like im on the outside looking in you bitch. and if the people of mexico tell me that, my sister in-law tells me that and i SEE with my own eyes and Hear with my own ears….i guess there is a good chance it must be true BITCH!!! what makes me sick is the refusal of americans outside of the western U.S. that dont deal with a large majority of illegals to blv that we have a problem. ask a brother in south central LA thats a union member if his work has been affected? ask the nurse in fresno CA if the E.R. is flooded with welfare mexicans making the wait over 4 hrs long.
Look my confused brain washed mexican “brother”, this isnt the first time that some stupid latino said something negative about blks….former pres. Fox said some bull shit too…..i live in the real world and if it looks like a duck…its a fuckn duck!!
Mexicans in the USA 50% of them vote republican, Just like the racist rednecks in the south….the numbers are very similar…..so im not going argue with anyone that feels mexicans do their part to help race relations…..thats laughable! it is what it is….until the country of mexico stops teaching hate in schools and we close the boarder, its only going to get worse

and by the way….the civil right movemment was well into its conception when MLK was murdered…..why did it take mexicans many years to wana march with us? and MLK reached out to them….they were taking jobs back then….so because mexicans decided to march 5-6 yrs after the movement began that means mexicans cared….i say that means that they didnt….but they sure did benifit from it……haters!

To Kevin & Black and Brown Say it Proud

I think both of you got Didi’s comments all wrong. I don’t believe they are racist, they are true.

We can’t ignor the fact that both African-american and hispanic families have suffered a great deal with the availablity of “assistance programs” that are in my view intended not to help families, but to introduce them to a cycle of goverment dependence. These programs have not only changed the dynamics of our families, but have created a mind set in both minority groups of bondage and lack of personal responsiblity.

This is why I think that her comments are not racially motivated, but misunderstood. If you have a chance google CURE or Star Parker and look at the work that she is doing in educating African-Americans on the dangers of falling prey to the so called “public assistance programs” that so hurt our country.

Thank you for allowing me to contribute my thoughts. I am a 36 year old mother and wife born in Mexico and moved to the US when I was five. I love this country and I love my people, but where I live you can see first hand what this programs do to the mind set of my hispanic race. Blessings and peace to you both and may the veil be broken for you both to see the beauty that is the love of Christ.

Best regards,

CECI

bottom line, mexicans have always been envyous of blks, always trying to make a point you “dont wanna be like african americans”…but yet all i see is mexicans trying to RAP!..wearing air jordans and sean john….even calling each other “nigga” and using our slang!…true mexicans are more racist than the redest redneck becuase they purposly teach their children that shit in school….at least white people teach it at home and its not sponsered by the government.

and you talk about “falling to pray” to public assistant programs….read the facts!…over 50% of welfare cases in CA are mexicans! so wear is the meat of your argument? before illegals come to the USA, the mexican government give them information booklets on how to sign up for welfare…wow! mexicans are the worse…..benifit from the civil rights movement and the blood of blacks and stab us in the back…..i pray OBAMA closes the boarder to you leaches!

I think you just reinforced Ms. Lima’s argument… She was trying to say that making public assistance programs available and accessable to any population makes them dependent on it. If your mexican, european, asian or black. My parents moved to the US legally in the 70’s and not once asked for gov’t assistance the only support they ever received was disablity when they became very ill and died 51and 61 respectfully. I thank God that I was raised with the ideology that if you don’t work hard you don’t get far. My parents struggled, but never believed in getting a had out from any program. I’m sorry to hear that you feel that all Mexican’s are leeches and that we hate blacks. I for one don’t.

Emitation is the best form of flattery. If you think that mexicans copy blacks and want to do things that they do I can’t argue with you, but that is more of a fad and pop-culture spreading into all types of people, I don’t think it is done out of mockery or disrespect to that culture.

I am from South Texas and I don’t know that stats as well as you, but I can probably say that 50-75% of welfare cases if not more are Hispanic. Again this is the point that Lima’s was trying to make, but her words were poorly chosen. Hispanic families are falling prey to the availablity of public assistance programs that are promoted by certain people in political authority. The more these programs are made available the more people will take advantage of them and then begin to think that they are in titled to them. This is how cycles begin no matter what your race….

I think that as long as the Mexican people and Hispanics in general have been in this country we have also had to deal with racism to an extent. I can’t say that I have any clue to the struggles in the African-american community, but I can say that the proof is in the pudding and the struggles they did overcome are demonstrated daily with the advances made in our country by African-american lawyers, doctors, people of power and influencial leaders. I think if you are going to focus on these accomplishments it will serve you best and not focus of the fact that people are coping “rap music” and rap dress and slang which at times is negative and hate promoting. Envy is such a strong word… I really doubt that Hispanics envy in anyway the struggle that African-americans endured in this country or the fact that their family structure has disintegrated. This is where the Hispanic community is as well.

thank you for letting me have some input in to your conversation and again I hope that the veil of understanding is torn and the love of Christ abound in your life.
Blessings and best regards,

A mexican that cares for the eternal life of all races..

Well these are my thoughts on your comments.

cecilia
you are by far just as if not more racist than didi.
read some facts as i did…..CA alone is 6 biln in the whole because of MEXICAN ILLEGALS becuase of helth care costs and lawenforcement…MEXICANS! not blks….i say again MEXICANS. 60% of the male population in prison in CA are MEXICAN!!…i say again MEXICAN…thats more than half. so for mexican people to say that they are BETTER than blks and to constanly put blks down is the pot calling the kettle blk…and makes you worse than the redest redneck! amazing how mexicans teach in schools and at home that they are better than blk people.
Mexico has the 3rd richest man in the world, but yet 15,000 per day are coming here illegally for a better life because mexico is a shithole….i could EZly say its because mexico is one of the most corrupt and selfish countries in the world….but i wont because you guys already know that….. a good portion of mexican women i know have kids from 2 or 3 didfent fathers, as do many blks….but for you to put ur nose up at blks only shows that the hate in your hart 2wrds my people was put their when u were young…..GOD dont like ugly….and to use GOD after u type that shit is a fukn sin! stop it.

Did you completly miss all of what I wrote? I’m with you on the fact that Mexicans contribute to the cost by taking a part of the in these programs. The problem is not the people using them no matter what race. The problem is that these programs are made available to anyone mexicans included.

I have not one racist bone in my body and am proud to say that there is even room in my heart to love people that think that it is okay to use profanities and God in the same sentence. I don’t know where you are getting that I put my nose up at blacks. Did you read my whole last paragraph about how I admire african americans have done to promote civil rights for all minorities. I have never taught my son or was never taught that african-americans were below me and I don’t know where you’re getting that… it might be California thing…. Oh wait, I might be accused of being racist toward Californians….I retract the last comment. You should really watch Star Parker and CURE education I really admire this beautiful woman who loves God and pushes for the betterment of all races including mine.

As for Mexico.. yes it is corrupt and the poor suffer the most. I’m glad that as a country though we have the love and compassion for people in need and God has blessed this nation with the ability to support others this is something that we should be proud of and not something we should complain about.

I hear in your words that you may have been hurt by some Mexicans personally and if that is so forgiveness is the best cure. If not then love is the answer that reflects the condition of our hearts. I’m sorry that you feel that I have offended you in any way by the words I wrote earlier and I ask for your forgivness if you did I meant no disrespect.

I leave you with this thought and a verse that will solve all racial tentions:

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Phil 2:5 NIV.

Blessings and best regards
A Mexican that cares for the eternal life of all races.

While not all Latinos have African blood, there are many of us who do, and we carry that blood with a deep sense of pride. The fact that the spanish came here as conquerors and Africans as slaves cannot be denied. However, like the rest of us, Mr. De Baca surey has Native American blood in his veins; the same Indian Americans that were regretably conquered by the spanish invaders.

This Black/Latino riff needs to be corrected. It is a Black/Mexican riff, which many other Latinos quite frankly have nothing to do with. Everyone in my household (which happens to be half Mexican) will be voting for Obama/Biden, simply because they are the better choice. if I recall correctly, the last time we had a “tax and spend” liberal in office (i.e., Bill Clinton) we ended up with a budget surplus. When was the last time that happened under a fiscal Conservative?

Kevin, trust me, you’re not the only one who’s witnessed this Mexican thing against most anyone else who’s not Mexican, but especially against those who have African blood.

I remember one of the first Mexicans I met when I arrived in Southern California. As soon as I spoke, he noticed my accent was not from these parts. He asked where I was from. Upon telling him where I was from he immediately said, “you have black blood.” Ignorantly, I took it as a compliment, as most people from my country would. Unfortunately he meant no compliment.

The woman I married is from Mexico. I use to go there with her in the past, but don’t any more. Got tired of the stares, the questions, the jokes, and unfortunately, the discriminatory comments. While the comments were never directed at me personally, they were aimed at people of African descent. Now a day, I simply pass on the opportunity to visit with her family. Plus, as you and others have said, that place has really turned into one massive sh_t hole!

Kevin, please don’t lump us all into the same group. We are different and see things different, one group from the other.
