Republicans—they’re not just embarrassing at home. A story in Expatica, a publication for expats living in Spain, reports that while members of the conservative European People’s Party (EPP) were in St. Paul this week to show their support for John McCain, Rudy Guiliani and Mike Huckabee were leading the crowd in chants of U-S-A! U-S-A! and ridiculing Barack Obama for bringing back “lots of European ideas” from his “celebrity” tour of that continent. Whoops.
Republican speakers at this week’s presidential nominating pageant have delighted in ridiculing Europe as a pro-Obama continent of stifling welfare states.
The reporters who wrote the story for Expatica, Frank Fuhrig and Chris Cermak, never explain their headline, “Republicans at convention: ‘Europeans a bunch of weenies’” which leads us to believe it was something they heard on the floor and not in a speech, since no other news source is reporting the alleged gaffe. Meanwhile, back in Spain, a group called “McCain in Spain,” walked around Madrid yesterday morning carrying a cardboard cutout of their candidate and offering their fellow Spaniards a chance to learn more about him. Actually, the cutout looks more lifelike than the real thing. This may actually work.

This is how Republicans think about and act towards our ALLIES. No wonder the U.S. is the world’s leper with herpes.
