Guanabee To Go: Get Mexican Enough With Stephanie Elizondo Griest

mexican.enough.jpg

Our old friend, author Stephanie Elizondo Griest, is back with a new book called Mexican Enough: My Life Between The Border Lines and she’s reading from it tonight in Manhattan. The half Tejana, half gringa travel memoirist grew up in Corpus Christi never believing she was raza enough and got a grant from Princeton to go down to the motherland and remedy the situation. Nice work if you can get it! The book turns out to be a fascinating look at politics from the other side of the border on topics like illegal immigration (Turns out it’s not a great thing for Mexico, either.) and Zapatista love (To Mexicans it’s as annoying as Che t-shirts.) We read it and couldn’t put it down so go check her out if you’re in the area. Details are after the jump.

I’m extra tan and full blooded Chicana and I still don’t feel Mexican enough. I totally identify.

I wish I could go!

I like going to Mexico to get in touch with the culture, family, etc. But I could care less if I am Mexican enough, I have nothing to prove to anyone there. I speak Spanish just fine and am not too concerned that I am not up on the latest, cutting edge Mexican slang. No matter how many times I go there I won’t be Mexican. No matter how many tacos and guaraches I eat, it won’t tranform me into anything other than what I am. An American who has roots in Latin America but is NOT Mexican. Mexican-Americans need to stop enabling and empowering Mexicans to look down on us. Que se jodan! Yo no necesito ni que me acepten ni que me quieran. Lo unico que me interesa es recibir buen trato como cualquier otro turista. Lo demas me tiene sin cuidado.

Dudes,
it’s so much more annoying than Che teeshirts. There’s a whole Zapatista line of apparel. There are BABY ONSEYS with Marcos on them.

Ugh!

Love from Chiapas,
calaverita

@calaverita: No way!!!!! I did not know that the zapatistas were d.f. hipsters answer to che. That sucks cuz I love the work that the zapatistas do. I guess anything is up for grabs to be exploited. Waaaaah
