Video: Lipstick Jungle Casts America's First White Latino Character

lipstick.ponce.png

We’re a little late to the party with this observation because who the hell watches Lipstick Jungle, the show based on yet another Candace Bushnell novel that will probably be cancelled at the end of this season? Okay, we do sometimes when we get around to it on the DVR as we finally did this weekend. And it turns out that in the last episode, they introduced that new Carlos Ponce character we told you about named “Rodrigo.” Rodrigo, who is one of the lead’s current love interests, is a handsome, well dressed, almost imperceptibly accented, environmentally conscious building contractor who is also, as you might recall, white.

Now, unlike a whole lot of non-Latino characters played by other white Latino actors, (Alexis Bledel, Charlie Sheen, Cameron Diaz to name just a few), Rodrigo is Latin. And he is allowed to reveal his Latin-ness in subtle, organic ways rather than wearing a guayabera and smoking a cigar. Check out the scene below where he artfully tells his new girlfriend Victory Ford, played by Lindsay Price, that he’s got a daughter named Celia. (He pronounces it “Sell ya” not “Seal ya.”) When Victory says, “Wow. You’re a dad.” He replies with forefinger raised, “I’m a papi, actually.” Why does this feel like a coming out scene all of a sudden?

Rarely have truer words been spoken: “I’m a papi.”

@Carrie: Riiiight?

So he’s a white-tino? They couldn’t get Blair Underwood to play a black-tino, or maybe Dennis Haysbert to reprise his rold of Pedro Cerrano from Major League. And when white shows go to the Hispanics to add some flavor, you know the writers don’t know what the hell they’re doing. As evidenced by republican rallies the last… oh… 140 years, most of “the real ‘Merica” doesn’t like to see the other on their tee-vee.

He’s obviously playing a half breed - probably an Irish Mexican - the creme de la creme of all half breeds!

I have found him attractive.

i meant to say i have NEVER EVER found him attractive!!!!

remember when he was a host on that one show..
I think the name was Control… it aired on Univision on saturdays.

Finally, a character on television with my name! Go Celia! Go Celia! :)
