Nom Nom: Leche Quemada

Halloween is this Friday! We know most of you are going to be lying in a pool of reconstituted mini Milky Ways and rum in your soiled Sarah Palin costumes. But for those of you who elect to stay at home while tiny witches and goblins and slutty French maids traipse about in search of goodies, here’s a recipe for something tasty to hand out to Trick or Treater, or to Halloween party guests. Because you don’t want to be that old lady who smells like cat pee and hands out apples, right?
Ingredients:
2 large cans evaporated milk
5 1/2 cups sugar
5 1/2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
Directions:
Mix milk, sugar, butter and salt in a large heavy pan and bring to boil.
Add brown sugar and stir until it dissolves. Continue cooking and stirring mixture over medium heat until it reaches soft ball stage. Stir until thick enough (as for fudge).
Drop by teaspoonful on a buttered pan or waxpaper or pour into buttered pan and cut into squares.
Simple enough, right? Adding pralines, chocolate or a sprinkle of powdered sugar can help dress up your candies more, if you’re so inclined. You can, additionally, wrap the candies in orange or red cellophane and tie with a black ribbon for an extra touch. Or just eat them all in your kitchen.

mmmm! this reminds me of day trips to reynosa with my grandma.
Now can you show me how to make that dulce de coco that’s white with the little stripe of pink at the top? That’s my favorite. And I’m living in such total anglo-ville right now that there’s no bodega selling the stuff anywhere nearby.
Leche quemada is my favorite candy on all of earth. And dulce de leche ain’t got nothing on it.
Oh yes! Thanks, G-bee! Can’t wait to make these!!
