“Top Model” Spin-Off “Operation Fabulous” Is Already So 1996

You’ve got to hand it to Tyra Banks, be “it” an accolade or a carefully-executed eyeroll: She’s a hardworking lady. Her latest TV venture is “Operation Fabulous” - a “Top Model” spin-off aimed at giving makeover to women around the world. We do hope those women are looking forward to hearing all about how much they remind Tyra of Tyra:
On “Fabulous,” “Jay and J,” as Manuel and Alexander are called on “Top Model,” will travel the country giving women makeovers. In various towns, the duo will select five participants and give them “Top Model”-style overhauls — how to dress, wear their hair and makeup and bring out their confidence with the support of family, friends and their community.
The project, from Kristina Prods., Mok’s 10×10 Entertainment and Banks’ Bankable Prods., seeks to capitalize on a fan-favorite “Model” segment, when contestants are given head-to-toe high-fashion makeovers supervised by Alexander.
True, that is probably the most interesting segment of “Top Model.” Because people love seeing transformation - and high-strung skinny girls crying on camera. We’re not sure if that equates to watching because it “instills confidence” in the women who are being told their hair and makeup and clothing choices aren’t quite right.
Maybe that’s because, personally, confidence came as a result of making ourselves under and learning to be comfortable with being more than our hair (once long and blonde and in ringlets), our clothing (pink and/or sparkly) and our stuffed bra. Which we still wear. Sorry.
What do you guys think, though? Will you watch? And if you do, will it be because you’re looking at how inspirational and confidence-building changing one’s look could be? Or are you hoping a woman breaks down crying while Tyra tries to look concerned?
