If you’re stressed out by all the recent news on hate crimes, well….so are we. To counteract this effect we’ve been obsessively watching Youtube clips of Latinas in stand up comedy, and thought we’d share what we think are some of the best. Some of these women are just breaking into fame, some are well established and one is recently passed, but they’re all freaking hilarious.
Anjelah Johnson is half Mexican, half Native American, and broke into internet fame for her nail salon sketch. Parts are really funny, but others are questionable- is it really OK to do an “Asian” accent, just cause you’re also a minority in America?
Cristela Alonzo is a 29 year old Mexican who opened and wrote for Carlos Mencia and was featured on NBC and Comedy Central.
Marilyn Martinez is pretty much a legend, though she tragically just passed away a year ago. Also, “well bench me, motherfucker” is totally our new pick up line.
Monique Marvez is a Cuban from Miami who comes off as soothing and gentle until you listen to what she’s actually saying. This clip of her explaining how men and women experience love differently is sheer genius. “We need evidence to take to the coven and show the other witches.”
Mariette “Peaches” Rodriguez is awesome not only for her comedy, but also because she was a freaking break dancer in the 80’s. Our kind of lady, and apparently other people agree, since she won the 2008 Funniest Comic in Connecticut award.
Many of these women have mentioned how it can be difficult to make it as a female comic. One of them recounted a time when she called to be considered for a stand up gig and the organizer told her “we already have a female comedian,” like they just needed that one…cause two would be too many? What, is there a special brand of “female” humor that can only be enjoyed in small amounts? Whatever, we’re just happy these women made it and that we could share them with you.

I’ve been a big fan of Guanabee this year, posting links to you guys on facebook almost daily. But I wonder why since a few of your writers are here in NYC don’t write more about Latinos from the Caribbean (save for Cubans.. really Cubans in NY, aside from myself?). I worked in a comedy club for two years and saw some amazing talent from Puerto Ricans and Dominicans and even my friend Jason Andors, a jewish comedian who’s best friend is hispanic (and a famous arist) and does some great comedy about Latinos here in NYC. Even the white boys from Upper West Side are into us, so what gives?
Also Ms Alonzo is great and she is so funny in person. I’m pretty sure she can does regular spots at Comix on 14th street.
