We sent our resident party girl “de alta sociedad” here at Guanabee to check out what the ultra chic and glamorous are up to during these harsh economic times. So it happens that they are still spending the money you and I don’t have on expensive portions of dry chicken au-jus and a chance to be seen by the right people. Party Girl recently attended the yearly “Women for Women International” Gala awards in Manhattan where she rubbed elbows with the like of Anderson Cooper, the gay white version of anchor Jorge Ramos, and Guanabee icon Jane Fonda. Her/His report after the jump:

Wealthy New Yorkers flock to charity events monthly, weekly, even nightly. These fiestas, as some see them, serve nicely as a tax break, as well as a runway for all those Barney’s-bought frocks. Indeed, the irony is full frontal; stiletto-ed waifs and their shoe-shined hubbies sip champagne while watching slide shows of impoverished women digging in mud fields. Needless to say, guilt works like a charm…the donations keep flowing even though our economic system today threatens to grind to a halt. The ‘Women For Women International’ 2008 Awards Gala held last week at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan offered such an opportunity of finger food, celebrity sightings and of course, but not without a healthy dose of reality. This particular event, which awards outstanding women who have helped other women in impoverished nations (hence the name Women For Women International), stands out from other, more sugar coated, soirees as the organizers unabashedly put truth in the guests faces. Indeed, master of ceremonies, Andersen Cooper, seemed to synchronize perfectly his mention of gang rape in the Congo with the first bite of crab salad. Yummy.

Despite such a difficult topic to stomach on a Wednesday evening, the message was solid fact: sistahs’s got to stick together. The Organization, founded by Iraqui citizen Zanaib Salbi, strives to support women in war torn countries and help them achieve safety, education, stability… the basics! There were many Latinas at the event who had become supporters and represented the fact that it’s not just the gringas who run in the philanthropic circle.

The ladies-who lunch gain that warm-fuzzy feeling by giving their “sisters” in Angola or Afghanistan to help them buy a cow and maintain her family for ONE YEAR. (Average yearly donation is $20 a year) Damn hermanitas! Help a sister out!. Yes, you heard right, we know the country and the world is in recession however, if cutting back on that second non fat latte of the day means you give a little: don’t be shy. Get together with a friend or a couple of friends and sponsor one or a couple sisters in need. Find out more about how to get involved by going to the Women For Women International website.

Besos,

Party Girl
