A Brazilian designer, Lucia Iorio, has come up with a new line of lingerie that includes a GPS tracking system. The collection, called “Fine Me If You Can” is being touted by some feminist groups as being a “21st century chastity belt.” We already have marriage for that. For her part, Iorio plays up the playfulness of the lingerie rather than the fact that it allows one’s partner to keep track of one’s whereabouts:

“This collection… is a wink to women and a challenge to men because, even if she gives him the password to her GPS, she can always turn it off.”

“She can be found only if she wants to.”

“It’s not a modern chastity belt. Some men think they can keep tabs on their girlfriends with it, but they’re wrong.”

We tend to agree:

What the groups arguing against the use of this lingerie line don’t consider is their own heteronormative standpoint in discussing the lingerie. Can’t two women also play with the lingerie’s GPS system? Can’t a woman buy them for a more submissive male partner? To us, sex is about submission and domination anyway, and not even necessarily to the extent of BDSM. There is just always an inherent power play involved in coupling. The GPS system could allow another level to that and add a sense of playfulness. After all, there’s no need to wear the GPS device when one is not engaging in sex or foreplay.

Of course, we personally wouldn’t purchase this lingerie because it costs anywhere from $800 to $1,000 dollars for something that looks like a pair of tacky-ass panties stapled to a beeper. Unruffled, Iorio points out another potential use for the lingerie:

Iorio admits to selling only a few so far, but is full of optimism for the future.

“Some women are now interested in buying it for protection,” she said, adding that in a violence-prone country like Brazil her GPS lingerie should soon be selling briskly.

Uh. Sure. Would you buy this lingerie? Do you think its sexist, sexy or just kind of stupid?

Actually the prize is pretty inexpensive, when compared buying your mistress a top of bimmer or mbz, and installing a GPS tracking device, and the monthly fees associated. The problem does arise, when your lady friend is an apartment building, cause gps systems does not tell you what floor she may be, only longitude and latitude coordinates….
