Michelle Obama’s Mother, Marian Robinson, Is Moving To The White House As The First Granny

Michelle Obama has invited her 71-year-old mom, Marian Robinson, to join the first family in the White House as our nation’s First Abuelita. Will she sprinkle us with talco and agua de violetas after bathtime? Michelle persuaded her reluctant mom to move from her home in Chicago’s South Side to Washington, D.C. in order to be closer to granddaughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, age 7. But it took a lot of begging on Michelle’s part and a few puppy-dog looks from the littler Obamas:
It is the first time in living memory that three generations of a new presidential family have moved en masse to Washington, although Mrs Robinson has not yet decided whether to take rooms in the White House itself or live nearby.
She initially told her daughter that “there wasn’t enough space” and said she “didn’t want to intrude” - hardly major concerns in the 132-room structure.
Mrs Obama revealed that she “begged” her mother to come with them. “The girls are going to need her, as part of their sense of stability,” she told Newsweek. “And what is true for my mom is that she does anything for us and her grandkids. All they have to do is look at her with sad eyes and she’s done for.”
Aw. Coercion is so adorable. We hope Mrs. Robinson has a great time at the White House and that she totally spoils her granddaughters, as is her right. We can’t wait until we also hear about the First Dog and the First Hamster and the First Best Friend and the First Great Uncle Twice-Removed.
