Even we who are hardcore carnivores were revolted by this video of turkeys being smothered and slaughtered while Sarah Palin held an interview in the foreground. The governor of Alaska was at a turkey farm to pardon one of the animals for Thanksgiving. But the framing of the interview for the event was such that we can see the turkey farmer slaughter two live turkeys as Palin blathers on about how thankful she is for her family’s health and happiness. Kind of made us want to go vegan? Nah! Well, maybe. Check it out after the jump while you still have a week to recover your appetite.

I read this earlier. This is kind of annoying. I’m not a big fan of hers but people need to get off her already. Of course there’s going to be turkeys being slaughtered at a bird farm. Where do people think their turkeys come from? Maybe everyone will be having “change” dinners this year. Get over it.

That farmer is hilarious. He kept staring at the camera while trying to hold down the turkey as if to say “hey, look at me! I’m slaughtering a turkey!”

@jrod: I think this was just to point out that maybe she could’ve done the interview in a different spot at the bird farm. We all know what happens there but it doesn’t mean we want to see it.
Tasty tasty turkey.

I find it hard to believe that she doesn’t at least have an assistant. Her people suck.

LOL, don’t let reality get in the way of politics…or holidays..hehe.
Some people are oh so cute. You guys are like little children with your disillusions. Where the hell do you think turkeys come from?
Like I’ve always said, “If you are not willing to kill it, don’t eat it.”
I’ll wager she is less of a hypocrite than most people as she would actually kill the turkey to eat it.

a giggling, fanatical theocrat speaking with adorable optimism while clucking livestock is slaughtered by America’s creepy hunter uncle. if you cannot appreciate the surreal quality of this video, you have zero cultural literacy.

Should Sarah Palin have spoken in a different scene on this turkey farm and not in full view of the slaughtering area? Had the camera angle hidden the end results of a turkey’s existence on this farm the viewer would have an out of sight out of mind experience. Hard to accept how thankful one truly is when only seeing part of the picture. Does not take away the fact slaughtering happens every day and in this instance only turkies are thought of . Wake up call for those who are used to buying the beautifully pre-packaged turkies in the grocery store and once cleaned and cooked and chowing down on the roasted, fried, or boiled turkey. Do you believe they did not know what the scene would be before they shot the interview?

I agree people should know where their food comes from. Which is why I was serious about not eating (at least turkey) anymore. I recently gave up red meat and pork and anything but poultry and fish, so I have no problem giving up turkey, too. I have to say it was an eye opener to watch what i had only, up till now, imagined. Also, this is why I am pro-hunting as long as you eat what you kill. I think it’s far more humane than the way animals are killed on farms and it takes a hell of a lot more consciousness than it does to only eat meat that comes from the grocery store.
The humor of the story is that she chose to hold the interview there because she’s such a hardcore country woman that it doesn’t phase her or she wasn’t aware she was in eye line of the slaughter going on in the background. Either way it’s funny/morbid.

All of you who are screeching “where do you think meat comes from?” just get over yourselves. I raise and kill my own chickens, and yet I’m not stupid enough to believe that anybody else wants to SEE that.
All you people who stand up and scream that if you don’t “acknowledge” where your food comes from, you’re somehow living in oblivion, do you kill your own food? Or, even harder, do you FARM your own food? My dad’s family were migrant farm workers, doing the circuit from central California, through Arizona and down into northern Mexico, and let me tell you, cutting the head off a chicken, ripping out all of its feathers, and then pulling the viscera out of the still-warm body cavity is a PICNIC compared to hunching over rows of lettuce for 10 hours a day.
So get over yourselves! When you can pick enough strawberries, lettuces, or grapes in a day to furnish your local Safeway, THEN come back to me with your tired, raggedy circle-of-life dance.

ROFLMAO! First I agree totally with dudeman, “If you can’t kill it, don’t eat it”
But once again we see how she misses the big picture. Instead of looking around and thinking “is this what I want people to see?” she acts without thinking so she can be in front of a camera. NOT a quality I want in a VP or gawd forbid a President!
Some said “lay off her” but maybe she should not be opening herself up for criticism by doing stupid things!??
Her being elected for higher office would so be the start of “Idiocracy” (If you haven’t seen the movie watch the beginning on youtube or somewhere!)

Damn Quintana….a little bottled up anger there? Just ask for a day off or something. Cesar Chavez didn’t starve himself for nothing, ya know? Take a load off. Breathe in, breathe out.

I agree with NoGuey: It’s not JUST about vegan issues/animal rights. It’s the cultural context of this creepiness.
Posted by La Bibi | November 21, 2008
I think some of you are turning this into something that it doesn’t need to be.
This isn’t about animal rights or where our food comes from. It’s about a clueless politician with the inability to step back and assess the situation she’s about to place herself in.
Normally it woud be incredibly refreshing to see a politician so unfiltered, but in this case, when it’s tangled up in a giant train wreck of stupid, it’s laughable and should be held up for ridicule.
[As turkey struggles and kicks in its final fight for life behind her.]
“…And to just participate in something that isn’t so heavy-handed politics that it invites criticism—certainly we’ll probably invite criticism for even doing this too, but at least this was fun!”
Come on! Now that’s funny! Weeeeeeeeee!!! Aren’t you having fun, America?
Gobble-Gobble! Happy Turkey Day, motherfuckers!

from a PR standpoint, one might give Palin the benefit of the doubt… but seriously, she might stop and give her surroundings a bit more consideration before she goes on interviews that millions will end up watching
Posted by movie fan | November 22, 2008
How frickin’ retarded was that of Sarhdaa! Palin to be standing in front of the guy who was butchering the turkeys !
Posted by joe dokes | November 22, 2008
All of you wanna be hardcore badasses should learn some compassion for the turkey there
Posted by Heartless | November 22, 2008
Why did it take so long for the turkey to die? What is the technology of that metal cone?
