Spanish Semen Sucks: Study Says It’s Among The Worst Quality In Europe

A recent study by the Valencian Institute of Infertility claims that Spanish semen is among the worst quality stuff in Europe. Poor long-suffering Spanish women. First dreadlocked mullets and now this?? But actually, the study reveals something of a paradox because while the sperm is the worst quality, it’s also the best at getting women preggers. The “quality” of the semen refers to the volume, mobility and concentration of the sperm but these measurements don’t necessarily correlate directly with how successful it will be at fertilizing an egg. Confused? So are we.

In the study, researchers looked at samples from the thirteen European countries as well as looking at data from egg-donor, in-vitro fertilizations from the respective countries. While Sweden had some of the best quality spunk, those couples also had the hardest time getting pregnant. Meanwhile Spain had the exact opposite situation, as 40% of studied couples got pregnant on their first try despite the “inferior” semen. So why is Spain’s sperm so crappy, and why doesn’t it seem to actually matter? Some researchers blame Spain’s semen problem on toxic industrial activity, and point to the geographical differences as evidence- i.e. men in the northern, most industrialized areas had the worst quality sperm, while those in the central and southern regions had the best. Apparently it’s fine though, cause what really matters is your lifestyle! Factors such as alcohol use, diet and stress can have a huge impact on the health of each sperm, so maybe the Swedes should lay off the vodka/crying binges?
