Video: Proposition 8 Protesters Rallying Outside Mormon Church In LA
6 November 2008, 6:35 PM. By Guanabee Staff

A rally is happening right now outside a Mormon temple in West Los Angeles to protest large financial contributions by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Proposition 8 campaign supporting a measure that bans same-sex unions in California. Video and photos taken at the temple on Santa Monica Boulevard and Overland were sent in by a tipster at the scene who had this to say:
no more mister nice gay is my new motto. i’m tired and just pissed off. separation of church and state is the foundation of this country and yet we have the LDS funding this initiative. they’re from UT. stay the fuck there, fundies. and by the way, we’re gonna make sure the IRS starts looking into the funding of prop 8. you’re not supposed to do that. let’s go al capone on you!!
i also was at the rally last night in West Hollywood and i have to say, the community here is rallying. personally, a little too late. i know some gays who didn’t vote because they knew that Obama was going to win and didn’t pay attention to the threat of 8 passing.
Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center CEO Lorri L. Jean announced the launch of a new website about an hour ago called invalidateprop8.org where supporters of Lesbians and Gays can make a donation in the name of Thomas S. Monson, president of the Mormon church, to help eradicate Prop 8. Does anyone else feel like it’s the sixties right now? Video and photos from the scene are below.
UPDATE FRIDAY 8:03AM EST: More than 2,000 supporters were present at the rally.

Thank you so much for that info, stop the h8!
This makes me so mad. As upset as I am that Prop 8 passed, people need to get their information right- the outspoken LDS support of Prop 8 actually did very little to get prop 8 passed- in the areas with the highest concentration of LDS members, Prop 8 was overwhelmingly voted AGAINST. And the funds contributed didn’t come from the church’s money itself, but individual members voluntary donations. What people didn’t get a chance to see was how divided even the church itself was about SOME of our leaders decision to support prop 8- many mormons, like myself, were devastated at the way it was handeled and deeply conflicted (like any thinking member of an organized religion often is). Truth is, even the church leadership in Salt Lake was VERY divided over how to to handle this issue. One of the basic tenants of the LDS church is tolerance- much of the homophobia stems from deeply rooted bias that people have, not necessarily because they are LDS, but because of what society or their upbringing has taught them. Having been LDS my whole life and attending churches all over the nation, I can honestly say that I never heard much time in church spent on homosexuality or gay-bashing, period. Check out this website: http://www.affirmation.org/ to learn about LDS church members who don’t get mentioned in the news very much, but who are growing in numbers and friends. The church can’t stop gay marriage, and on many levels, it knows this. It sometimes takes a LONG time for the church to accept changes in society. But its support for Prop 8 in California? Didn’t really do much except create more divisiveness, both within and outside the church, and that can’t go on.
yeah, i have to say it seems pretty easy to want to blame another group while we’re hurting. however, i think the blame lies with us, not w/ LDS. we raised MORE money than they did and we lost. fair and square. too bad the wealthy individual donors never really separated themselves from the church and i’m sure the media picked up on that and ran away with it…hollering and screaming i might add…
so i, personally, think the rage is completely misdirected at LDS. we need to look at the no on 8 campaign and figure out what went wrong. my coworker was so upset with the way the campaign was run that he sent an email to them asking for his money back. fat chance, but at least he got his point out there.
