Axolotl is not only the name of half the girls dancing at your quinces, (AxoLOtL!) it also happens to be a quite interesting-looking amphibian native to Lakes Xochimilco and Chalco in what is now Mexico City. The name “Axolotl” is said to come from either “Xolotl,” the Nahuatl god of deformations and death (our ex?) or from a combination of “atl” (water) and “xololtl” (dog), to mean water-dog. Cute!

Axolotls come in a variety of colors, from pale gray, cream and peach to vibrant golds and blacks. It has the ability to regenerate parts (Fun! And useful!) and, interestingly, remains in its larval state its entire life, unlike other amphibians like frogs. Plus, if you look closely, they kind of look as if they’re perpetually smiling.

Perhaps due to their total and utter cuteness, axoltls are endangered and, thus, most commonly found in captivity. We’re going to go ahead and name it Guanabee’s mascot.

I had to read a short story by Cortazar about this animal in college. Then for our quiz the professor was just like, ok draw a picture of it, so then it really came out who did the reading and who no.
