Beyond The Barrio: “Sandy Paws Grooming Shop” Makes Art Out Of Mere Dogs

Remember back when the internet was Awesome? When web pages contained clip art and midi tracks and dancing, super-pixellated .gifs of cartoon animals? When the internet was populated solely by 15-year-old girls named Raven and their respective covens / knitting circles? We miss those days! Which is why we were so pleased when a friend directed us to Sandy Paws’ Grooming Shop’s website and the amazing work of one Sandy Hartness.

We will admit that, upon first seeing these pictures, we clucked our tongues and thought “Oh, white people.” But then we remembered: Hey. We know plenty of older Latina women — and plenty of young Latina women who act like older Latina women their entire lives — who would scarcely bat a lash at the thought of shaving a dog to resemble a dragon.
