Debra Messing Finds Her “Inner Latina” For Movie Nothing Like the Holidays

Debra Messing, a non-Latina, plays a major role in the holiday comedy Nothing Like the Holidays. The movie follows the Puerto-Rican Rodriguez family as they gather for Christmas in Chicago for the first time in three years. Messing plays the wife of John Leguizamo. Reuters decided to get to the bottom of her method acting by repeatedly pointing out how non-Latina she is and how non-Latina her role is. They describe her role as “a very non-Latina career-driven executive wife.” They also open their story by pointing out that she “sticks out like a sore thumb.” You know, because she’s a white, delicate flower around a bunch of brown potatoes.
Reuters further elaborates on Messing’s acting method by stating that she accessed her “inner Latina” (her words) by thinking about her elementary school Spanish class. If we recall elementary school Spanish correctly, we fail to see how learning to say “Voy a la biblioteca” and celebrating Cinco de Mayo taps into one’s “inner Latina”. But that’s just us.
Messing says of the movie:
“There is an excitement about the possibility of tolerance, especially now we are going to have our first African American president,” she said. “It seems like a reflection of that, this film. And I hope it does become a trend.”
We genuinely like Barack Obama, but was the movie really made after he was elected the first African American president? No? Then that isn’t reflected in this film. It’s science. And the passage of Prop 8 belies any atmosphere of tolerance that might have gathered over the nation on election day. Don’t get us wrong, though, we’re totally going to see this movie. Mmm. Potatoes.

Great post! Had me in stitches.
“a very non-Latina career-driven executive wife.”
Because Latina women only want to stay home, have behbehs and eat frijoles. And sometimes blog.
@ Fredo: THIS Latina does.
