Rosario Dawson and Eva Mendes both have new movies coming out this year. Rosario is starring with Will Smith in the movie Seven Pounds while Eva is in the movie The Spirit with Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson.
Since the two share quite a few similarities in the roles they’ve chosen (like, for example, “Will Smith’s love interest”) and because we like to think we kind of look like both of them (we don’t), we got to thinking about which one we would most like to be. Sure, they’re both “smoldering” and “sexy” and “scented” - or whatever Entertainment Weekly wants to call them. But they’re also strong and smart and… something else with a “S!”
This isn’t necessarily about who’s the better actress but about who gets the better roles (not just the hot, sexy girlfriend/mistress) and who represents Latinas the best.
So without further ado, here it is - Rosario versus Eva:
“The Sexy Lady Role”
Every Latina has to play it. Usually the role consists of being some hot guy’s hot girlfriend, but both Rosario and Eva got to play sexy ladies that didn’t have to sit in a man’s shadow throughout the whole movie. While Rosario got to play a tough chick (isn’t she always?) in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, Eva got to play a white man’s mistress (or a clever gold-digger, depending on your viewpoint) in the remake of The Women. So, which represents Latinas the best? Posing on the cover of Rolling Stone covered only in bullets or stealing someone’s husband while working as a perfume counter girl? Eh, we’ll go with the bullets.
“The Cool Graphic Novel/Comic Book Sexy Lady Role”
Adapting graphic novels only recently came into style with the successes of Sin City and 300. Eva’s new movie The Spirit also has the same look and feel of these other two movies, but the difference (or from what we can tell from promo pictures) is costume. Rosario played a prostitute in Sin City and thus got to wear the appropriate but revealing garb of a bra, some fishnets, a thong, and various leather straps. From what we can tell of Eva’s role, she gets fancier costumes but her character (though not a prostitute) is described in the teaser trailer as being hired by the Octopus (Jackson) to seduce The Spirit. So that’s kind of like a prostitute. Since we actually loved Rosario’s look from Sin City we’re tempted to hand the prize to her. BUT, Eva Mendes did give a an interview in Spanish to promote her new movie, so, for representing Latinas linguistically (which has nothing to do with being an actress, but whatever) we’ll say she wins this category.
“The Funny, Sexy Lady Role”
While Eva took a comic turn in the relatively predictable romantic comedy Hitch and the unintentionally hilarious The Fast and the Furious, Rosario decided to brighten the set of Clerks II. And that she did. While we love Eva and we love Will Smith, nothing beats a movie with a donkey love scene. Hands down. Rosario wins.
Granted, Rosario did bless our website with her appearance that one time, so perhaps we’re just partial, but we’re declaring Rosario the awesomest of the two.
