Video: Barack Obama Picks Hilda Solis For Labor Secretary

Hilda Solis, a Democrat who was the first Latina elected to the California Senate, has been selected by Barack Obama to be this nation’s next Labor Secretary. Solis, who is of Mexican and Nicaraguan descent, is all about unions and energy efficiency.

In 1996, she fought to increase California’s minimum wage, raising it from $4.25 to $5.75 an hour. She also authorized a sum of $125 million to increase work force training programs in her state - mainly training in the areas of energy efficiency and green construction.
