DF’s Mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, was determined to show his city’s kids the true meaning of Christmas; weather you can only experience in northern or mountainous regions. Wait isn’t Christmas about the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Cristo, and family and cookies? “No!” said Ebrard, “It is about spending huge amounts of public funding on snow-maker rentals and giant, fake fir trees!”

To that end, the mayor set up an elaborate, free, “Invierno en la Capital” fair in the Zocalo, complete with a tobogganing area, ice rink and a huge mound of snow for children to make snowmen with. Of course, this being A. artificially made snow and B. an attraction for poor people, the kids have to destroy their snowmen and put the snow back on the communal mound as soon as they’ve finished decorating and posing with their snowman. Video after the jump:

We love how little Ismael is clearly totally reluctant to touch the snow. Right, because it’s cold and sharp, and maybe if Ebrard weren’t so busy romanticizing how northern countries portray Christmas he would realize you don’t need softly tinkling snow or prancing arctic reindeer to make Christmas happen. You just need love! And heavily spiked eggnog.

As a child I spent every Christmas in Donna, TX with presents under some decorated palmas and about 75 first cousins. My abuelita even had a nativity scene that included nopales. That is Christmas to me…not snow and fir trees.

Although, this year, I am hoping Chris Christmas Rodriguez will pop out from the palmas.
