Now that we’ve down away with superfluous, superficial matters like who will be our next Commerce Secretary, let’s sit down and talk about the real issues facing our nation: Namely, the question of what our next First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the First Nuggets, Sasha and Malia, should wear to Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration next month.

Any designer would be tickled mustard (it’s the new pink) to have Michelle wear one of his or her designs. Unfortunately, some of their proposed designs are the sartorial equivalents of being Ralph Nader: Awkward, embarrassing, and best left to gentle internet mockery.

Our selections for some of the best — and worst — designs, after the jump:

Michelle Obama

Favorite: Koi Suwannagate

This is our very favorite pick for Michelle. It’s unique, beautiful, a nice balance of structured and ethereal and it looks like something Michelle would actually want to wear and feel comfortable in, given some of her recent choices.

Best: Peter Som

Simple, elegant, and unfussy.

Best: Michael Kors

We love how Michelle looks in blue and think the cut of this dress is eye-catching and iconic without looking overly done.

Worst: Betsey Johnson

Betsey, we love you, but we’re not sure this is quite Michelle’s style. We do want to keep the sketch though!

Worst: Chanel

Eh. This might just be the sketch, but the dress seems very Jessica McClintock-for-prom. And do we have to go with the red and black color scheme again?

Worst: Christian Lacroix

We can almost hear “Ab Fab’s” Edina’s screams of “Lacroix! Lacroix!” while wearing her giant gold crucifixes and embellished, over-sized blazers. Is the idea fabulous? Yes! Is it wearable? No! You know you need to take a moment and think things over when you find yourself wearing a cape. But, again, the sketch is wonderful!

Sasha & Malia

Favorite: Isaac Mizrahi

We love the youthful candy colors of these dresses. And, actually, we think the sketch for Michelle’s dress is spot-on, too.

Worst: Bonnie Young

These girls are 10 and 7! That’s either way too old or way too young to be wearing frou-frou pageant outfits.
