Two days after 41-year-old ice skater Jayne Soliman died of a brain hemorrhage, doctors delivered her daughter, Ava Jayne. Medical staff kept Soliman’s heart beating up until the delivered the baby by C-section last Friday.

Says friend and fellow skater David Phillips, who was with Soliman when she died:

“To Jayne, becoming a mother was the best thing in the world that could have happened to her. She was so happy, she had always wanted to be a mum more than anything else. She lived to have a baby girl - that was the one thing she wanted in her life.”

“The hospital laid her baby on her shoulder when she was born so she could have a moment with her. This would have been the best day of her life.”

Soliman collapsed at her home after having gone to bed complaining of a headache. She was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered she had suffered a hemorrhage caused by a tumor resting on a major blood vessel.

Doctors were hopeful, however, that they could still deliver a healthy baby. They gave Soliman injections to help the baby’s lungs develop and, in a matter of 48 hours, they brought a two pound, one and a half ounce baby girl into the world.
