Fashion Victim: Woman’s Ugg Boot Caught In Level Crossing After Boyfriend Dragged Her Onto Train Tracks
13 January 2009, 5:30 PM. By Alex Alvarez
A woman’s Ugg boot — or, you know, the actions of a violent and dangerous boyfriend — led to her death. Kelly Mack, 29, was rescued by a good Samaritan after getting her Ugg boot stuck in a level crossing on a train track. Immediately after, however, her irate boyfriend, 39-year-old Darren Palmer grabbed her from her rescuer and dragged her onto the tracks in an attempt to catch their train on an opposite platform. She got her shoe stuck again and was eventually crushed by the oncoming train, whereas Palmer was able to jump out of the train’s path. It’s never the ones you hope.
Says Prosecutor David Etherington:
The prosecution case is that Darren Palmer dragged Kelly Mack, who was his partner, across the railway tracks against her will to get to the opposite platform where they were going to catch a train to Clacton.
The problem is when he did this the level crossing barriers were down and a train was due to come through. The Crown’s case is he ignored the shouts of those present, bystanders, warning of the train’s imminent arrival. He acted with complete disregard to the obvious danger to which he was putting them both.
Mack’s rescuer, after freeing her foot, had taken her to the London side of the tracks, only to have her boyfriend come and pull her over to the Clacton side, where a train was approaching, arguing with her over why it is that she “stalled” in climbing over with him the first time. It was discovered that Mack was drunk and on methadone and a Valium-like drug at the time of her death.
We’ll admit to feeling uneasy over the source article’s decision to make it seem like the woman’s boot — and not her aggressive and abusive boyfriend was at fault for her death. Credit where its due and all that.
