Four Boys Dead Near Barcelona After Sports Center Collapse
26 January 2009, 11:03 AM. By Cindy Casares
Four boys in the Barcelona suburb of Sant Boi de Llobregat near the Prat Airport died yesterday when hurricane force winds caused a metal roof to collapse on them before a game of baseball at a sports center. Details are sketchy as to the reason for the high winds which CNN reports “would indicate” a category 2 hurricane and the Associated Press calls “freak.” The boys were part of a group of seventeen who were about to play ball when the storm hit. Adults corralled 11 of the kids inside the building, while six of them stayed outside. But it was those inside who were hurt when the metal roof and part of the building’s concrete siding collapsed, killing four boys ages 9-12 and injuring 9 others including two adults shortly after 11AM. Other deaths have been reported throughout Spain and France due to the same high winds. AP video is below.
