Happy, Gay: Colombia Awards Rights To Gay Couples
30 January 2009, 9:03 AM. By Alex Alvarez
Colombia’s Constitutional Court has ruled that gay couples must legally be granted the same rights as their breeder counterparts.
Homosexual couples will now be able to receive the same set of rights and benefits awarded to unmarried heterosexual couples, such as rights relating social security, inheritance, pension and health. And the right to act passive aggressively all day when someone places an empty box of cereal back on the shelf instead of preparing it for recycling. LAZY.
The court decision follows a successful lawsuit filed by Colombia Diversa (a GLBT rights group), Dejusticia (a human rights organization), and the Group for Public Interest Rights from the University of the Andes.
Currently, Uruguay is the only other Latin American country to recognize rights for gay couples. Every other one still continues to listen to techno, wearing white capri pants and a chronic sense of denial.
