Jason Wu’s Tranny Doll Dresses > His Dress For Michelle Obama
21 January 2009, 2:45 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Taiwanese-born, Brooklyn-based designer Jason Wu apparently had no clue that First Lady Michelle Obama was planning on wearing his ethereal toilet paper cupcake dress on Inauguration night.
Jason has never met Michelle Obama face-to-face, but was approached this past November by someone in the Obama camp, asking him to come up with a potential dress to be scrutinized and picked apart by hundreds and thousands of stragers.
He was told little more than that Michelle wanted “something that sparkled.” And so the cream-colored, floral-accented confection was born.
Wu says the dress is “priceless” and will go to the Smithsonian Institute, sharing space with other inaugural ball gowns. The designer recalls the moment he saw his priceless dress on the First Lady:
I found out when the whole world found out. I said, ‘It looks white. It looks like mine…’ I had a box of pizza and it nearly fell over. I was sitting there with my friends, and they were screaming.
I just hoped for the best. She’s so statuesque. I knew white would look great on her. White is a powerful color. I wanted to show off her arms, but not too much.
Aw, that’s got to be a nice feeling. Even if the dress looks like something out of David’s Bridal. (Sorry, J.) We’re actually much bigger fans of his petite collection:
Yup! Jason Wu also designs Barbie dresses, including those for collectible RuPaul and Amanda Lepore dolls. Tuck it back and sprinkle it with sequins, our heart belongs to Jason now.

I totally loved the gown. It was soft, flowing and gorgeous. Just like someone going to a ball.
Obviously Lady Obama liked the silhouette(sp?) otherwise she wouldn’t have chosen it.
It was similar to a wedding gown. After all, she’s the new bride to the country.
Way to go Jason Wu. I’m proud of you. Don’t pay any attention to these haters on the messageboards. They obviously don’t know real fashion.
